The Way of the Righteous

Throughout the Scriptures the way of the righteous is contrasted with the way of the wicked.
The way of the righteous is a blessed life. The righteous (godly person) experience blessing but the wicked will perish!!
Blessing is what happens to us when we get to know God & meditate upon & apply His word to our lives.
Psalm 1 highlights to us the blessing & benefits of being someone who does just that.
The blessed life & way of the righteous is all about knowing God & deepening our relationship with Him.
Psalm 1 will direct our thoughts around this crucial topic in this TFD series.

Blessed is the man
Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly,
Nor stands in the path of sinners,
Nor sits in the seat of the scornful;
But his delight is in the law of the Lord,
And in His law he meditates day and night.
He shall be like a tree
Planted by the rivers of water,
That brings forth its fruit in its season,
Whose leaf also shall not wither;
And whatever he does shall prosper. Psalm 1:1-3 NKJV

The psalmist outlines important choices that lead one along the paths of righteousness.
First & foremost, this is about wise investment in relationships. FIRST things first!!
Spending time with the Lord & wisely choosing our friends & associates are key factors.
We become like those we spend time with & so, above all else, choose & carve out time to be with the Lord.
Time spent in God’s presence tells & it tells in every which way. SELAH

On of the ways outlined in this psalm to be with the Lord is to spend time in His word – the Bible.
Delight in it & meditate upon it day & night. Invest in it so that it can bring godly transformation to your life.
A regular routine of engaging with & investing in the Word of God is crucial for our spiritual lives.
It is choice food & rich nourishment for our spirits & souls (Psalm 19:10, 119:103; Matthew 4:4; John 4:32).
It is one of the chief ways that the Lord speaks to us. The living word Jesus revealed in the written word by the Holy Spirit.
Read it, listen to it, study it, meditate upon it & crucially put it into practice. Ideally every day!!

The way of the righteous leads to blessing in life & enhances 7 nourishes our spiritual lives.
This psalm highlights 3 ways that is so:

  • Refreshment
  • Fruitfulness
  • Prosperity (living successfully for the Lord).

We will examine each in turn over the next few days.
To walk in the way of the righteous & deepen our relationship with God takes daily dedication & discipline.
At the start of 2024 let us be those who put in place the foundations & disciplines that will enable our spiritual lives to grow & flourish.
The blessings & benefits of those wise & godly choices will then bud, sprout forth, blossom & fruit in our lives. Hallelujah!!!

For Reflection

  • How am I making time to be with the Lord & in what ways am I engaging with the Word of God?
  • In what ways do I choose, & then evaluate, my relationships with friends & associates?
  • Meditate upon the way of the righteous.

A song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that You, & Your Word, are life & strength for me & to me,
Blessing me with daily strength, rich nourishment & enduring sustenance.
Jesus, the Living Word, in the power of your Spirit reveal Yourself to me through the written word,
Keep changing & transforming me more & more into your likeness.
Holy Spirit give me godly wisdom to choose my friends & associates carefully,
Each & every day give me the grace & discipline I need to keep investing in my relationship with the Lord.
This I ask in the mighty Name of Jesus.
