The cost of Discipleship

Jesus calls us to be disciples who make disciples. Teaching people & nations to follow Him & obey His commands (Matthew 28:18-20).
Christian discipleship costs & It requires focus, total commitment, a turning from self towards Christ & embracing a life of worship & witness.
Yesterday we looked at how we are to fix & fasten our gaze upon Jesus so that we stay fully focussed upon Him (Hebrews 12:1-2).
We will look at what total commitment means today. Jesus calls us to a tri-fold commitment.
We are to be committed to Christ, committed to Christ’s cause & committed to His Church. SELAH

Then He said to another, “Follow Me.” But he said, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.”
Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and preach the kingdom of God.”
And another also said, “Lord, I will follow You, but let me first go and bid them farewell who are at my house.”
But Jesus said to him, “No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.” Luke 9:59-62 NKJV

Jesus is looking for total commitment from His disciples. There is to be no letting up & no looking or turning back.
Jesus must be our chief focus & priority. We must love Him, & be loyal to Him, above all else (Luke 14:25-27).
Once we set ourselves to plow with the Lord we must keep persevering with Him.
We are to be totally committed to the Lord Jesus Christ. He calls us firstly unto Himself. SELAH
Commitment & loyalty are not popular things in this modern world. People are always on the lookout for better options!!
Christianity, & following Christ, is the path of total commitment. That is the cost to pay!!

Jesus also calls us to be totally committed to His cause. The cause of the gospel & the kingdom.
This gospel of the kingdom must be preached in all the earth & then the end will come (Matthew 24:14).
We are a kingdom people entrusted with the good news of salvation & to be bringers of the kingdom.
To truly follow Christ we declare the good news of the gospel , demonstrate the kingdom & deliver good works.
That is the second call & cost of discipleship – witnesses of the gospel & kingdom. SELAH

Thirdly Jesus calls us to be committed to His Church. We belong to His body (1 Corinthians 12:12-27).
We are to keep faithfully meeting together with our brothers & sisters in Christ (Hebrews 10:25).
Worshippers & witnesses together fully committed to the Lord, one another & the Lord’s purposes.
The cost of discipleship is to be totally committed to Christ together with His cause & His Church.
Jesus great promise is that He is ever with us to help us accomplish this great mission. Hallelujah!!
The Lord has always been looking for full & total commitment from His people (1 Kings 8:61).
In & under the New Covenant that commitment centres upon Jesus Christ. May we be truly & fully committed.
Draw strength & courage, re-new your commitment to Christ TODAY.

For Reflection

  • In what ways am I making known the gospel & the kingdom?
  • Am I truly committed to all that Christ calls me to – Himself, His cause & His Church?
  • Meditate upon the differing ways in which Jesus calls us to be committed.

A song related to theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that You are totally committed to me,
That You held nothing back in securing my salvation.
Jesus, thank you for your great commitment to the salvation plan of God,
Give me grace & strength to follow You faithfully & fully.
Holy Spirit help me to love the Lord & be loyal to Him with all my heart,
Keep me faithfully following Jesus, truly serving His cause & committed to His Church & people.
This I ask in the mighty Name of Jesus.
