The cost of Discipleship

Jesus calls us to follow Him as His disciples who make disciples. This has benefits & blessings as well as costs.
Christian discipleship requires focus, total commitment, a turning from self towards Christ & embracing a life of worship & witness.
Yesterday we saw how we are to be fully committed to Christ, His cause & His Church. ALL IN for Jesus on 3 fronts!!
Today we will consider how in turning to Christ we are to turn away from sin & self.
We are to daily clothe ourselves in the New Humanity ‘In Christ’. SELAH

The night is far spent, the day is at hand. Therefore let us cast off the works of darkness,
and let us put on the armour of light. Romans 13:12 NKJV

Jesus calls us to walk in His light. He called people to Himself & to leave a life of sin.
Sin no more or leave your life of sin was His encouragement & exhortation to those He ministered to (John 5:14, 8:11)
‘In Christ’, & no one else, we find the grace, strength & spiritual resources to do just that.
We are called to be a people of the light, walking in Christ’s light & wearing His armour of light (John 8:12; Ephesians 5:8; 1 John 1:7).
We are to cast off & lay aside the works & ways of darkness. That again is the cost to pay!!
Putting aside our previous dark habits & ways & now living as the New Humanity ‘In Christ’ (Colossians 3:9-11).
A daily casting aside of the dark deeds of the flesh & daily taking up the ways of Christ. SELAH

This concept of turning from self (the flesh), the world & the devil & fully turning to Christ is a repeated New Testament theme.
It is picked up explicitly in two of the Apostle Paul’s New Testament epistles (Colossians 2:11-14, 3:8-14, Ephesians 2:14-18, 4:17-31).
New clothing as we take up salvation & become increasingly sanctified is also a repeated theme.
White robes, the garment of salvation, the robe of righteousness & also the armour of God.
The bottom line is that we must walk worthy of Christ & worthy of our calling (Ephesians 4:1).
That carries a cost. SELAH

‘In Christ’ we are called into God’s marvellous light (Colossians 1:21-23). Clothed in light to walk in light!!
Christ calls us to Himself & that means a lifetime of change as He makes us more & more like Him (Romans 8:29).
We must be willing to die to sin & self so that we can live for Christ (Romans 6:11). Giving up self to gain Christ.
Put on your garments of light & let Christ shine through you. Be the light & walk in the light. Hallelujah!!

For Reflection

  • In what ways am I putting on the New Man ‘In Christ’?
  • What have I, or am I, struggling to fully cast aside?
  • Meditate upon the need, & what it means, to cast aside the old sinful humanity & take up the New Humanity in Christ.

A song related to this theme:

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that You call me to walk in Your light,
And that You have clothed & equipped me to accomplish that.
Jesus, Light of the World, shine your light on, in & through me,
May I walk in Your light in a way that truly honours You.
Holy Spirit give me wisdom & strength to turn fully away from all sin,
Give me grace to daily die to self & to take up my armour of light.
This I ask in the mighty Name of Jesus.
Amen
