Each of the gospel writers are painting a portrait of Christ to help the reader understand who Jesus is.
They are four different gospel writers, each inspired by the Holy Spirit, sharing their perspective on who Jesus is.
Together they share similar, & different material, to provide a rounded revelation of Jesus & His ministry upon the earth.
The first chapter of John‘s gospel goes overboard to reveal who Jesus is. He provides a minimum of 10 titles!!
With so many titles of Jesus mentioned in just one chapter John leaves us in no doubt who Jesus is!!
This TFD series will examine the different titles, roles & tasks of Jesus that John outlines in that first chapter of his gospel.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. John 1:1-4 NKJV

John begins by revealing Jesus as the eternal Word (Logos).
This Word was continually existing co-eternally with God. With God yet at the same time fully God.
Everything was made & came into existence through Him – He is inspiration for all creation.
John is basically saying that Jesus is the living expression of God revealed upon the earth. Wow!!
Jesus is the living eternal Word of God – a revelation of Jesus’s deity. SELAH

The concept of the ‘Word of God’ would have been familiar to John’s Jewish readers.
Echoes of the creation in Genesis & all the prophets had to say about the ‘word of the Lord’ would readily spring forth.
For Greek readers, the Logos / Word was associated with the search for the meaning of life.
John is writing profoundly yet communicating brilliantly to both groups in his audience – Jews & Greeks.
He is telling them about what they have been searching for all their lives in a hugely culturally relevant way.
Their quest is met in the person of Jesus Christ – the eternal Word (Logos). SELAH
In Christ, & Him alone, they, & us today, find life, & light & truth. So, so good.
Just amazing what John has said & revealed about Jesus Christ in the first four verses of his gospel!!
Eternal Word who is God, Creator & bringer of life & light. Awesome!!

Jesus is unique as the one and only, one of a kind God expression.
John is telling us that God is like Jesus & therefore worth believing in & getting to know..
John’s purpose & desire is that you may encounter & experience ‘God in Christ’.
The opportunity to commune with God Almighty through friendship with Jesus.
In the unique Christ is found the meaning & purpose of our lives – relationship with the Creator God who made us.
There is no better opportunity or invitation in this life. SELAH

For Reflection

  • In what ways am I experiencing the Lord’s life, light & truth ‘in Christ’?
  • How can I communicate Christ in a way that resonates with contemporary culture?
  • Meditate upon Jesus as the living, eternal Word of God.

A song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that in Christ the eternal Word You fully revealed Yourself,
Reaching down in & through Jesus to draw me to Yourself.
Jesus, thank you that You perfectly reveal the Father & His heart,
And that You have made a way for me to access His life, light & truth.
Holy Spirit keep me daily communing intimately with Christ,
Strengthening & developing my friendship & fellowship with Him.
This I ask in the mighty Name of Jesus.
