Whom then shall we serve?

We live in a fast-paced, ever-changing world where daily we are bombarded with information & a myriad of differing distractions.
In the midst of all this we must make important choices that shape who we are & what our future will look like.
Each of us can learn from Joshua’s godly example as he encouraged the Israelites to choose to stand strong & serve the Lord.
Daily – THIS DAY – we must choose to serve the Lord. This will be our focus for today.

“Now therefore, fear the Lord, serve Him in sincerity and in truth, and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the River and in Egypt. Serve the Lord! And if it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” So the people answered and said: “Far be it from us that we should forsake the Lord to serve other gods; Joshua 24:14-16 NKJV

Joshua encourages the people of Israel to make a choice – choose this day whom you will serve.
This choice will define who they are, along with the direction & distinctiveness of their very lives – their identity & destiny. SELAH
He then backs this up with an emphatic exhortation that they should serve the Lord.
Joshua has made his mind up & he is rallying the people to make their minds up too
The word used for day can mean that very day (24 hours) or a significant period (season) of time.
Both are relevant & important in choosing to serve the Lord. THIS DAY – today, in this season, at this time!

Joshua was reminding the people of Israel that the Lord desired their loyalty & undivided affection & devotion.
Thankfully, Joshua’s urgent appeal was met with appositive & enthusiastic response from the people.
Like Israel at this time in Joshua’s day we must chose to serve the Lord & we must do this daily.
Salvation is a process with a beginning (past), a continuing development (present) & a divisive conclusion (future).
We are saved, being saved & to be fully saved (Philippians 2:12-13; Ephesians 2:8-9, 4:1-3; Revelation 21:1-3, 22-27).
We must persevere, patiently enduring, choosing Christ until He returns, for he who endures to the end will be saved (Matthew 10:22, 24:13).
Today is the day of salvation (2 Corinthians 6:2) & today is another day to choose to follow Christ. SELAH

Every choice carries consequences for good or bad, therefore make your chooses count.
Make them count for now & make them count for your future & your destiny.
Who & what you serve in this life will determine who & what you serve in the life & age to come.
It will shape both your identity & purpose here & now & it will also shape your eternal destiny. SELAH
Choose this day, & every day, to keep following Christ & serving the Lord. Hallelujah!!

For Reflection

  • In what ways does my lifestyle reveal that I am someone that serves the Lord?
  • How mindful am I that today’s choices shape tomorrow’s future & my eternal destiny & reward?
  • Meditate upon how we are called to choose to serve the Lord each & every day.

A song related to this theme:

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Thank you for such a wonderful salvation made freely available ‘In Christ’,
In this day, & in my generation, give me help & strength to keep choosing & serving You.
Jesus, thank you that You are my Master, model & perfect example,
Teach & train me to obediently serve the Lord.
Holy Spirit give me boldness & courage to keep choosing the Lord & His ways,
And keep me persevering & enduring to the end.
This I ask in the mighty Name of Jesus.
Amen
