Whom then shall we serve?

Every day we must make important choices that shape us & determine both our present & our future.
Our attention & affection is constantly being sought after by a myriad of different people & things.
The key question In the midst of all this is who will we serve & worship?
Daily we must choose to serve the Lord. To choose the Lord means there are things we must leave behind & cast aside!!
The importance of this will be our focus for today.

“Now therefore, fear the Lord, serve Him in sincerity and in truth, and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the River and in Egypt. Serve the Lord! And if it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” So the people answered and said: “Far be it from us that we should forsake the Lord to serve other gods; Joshua 24:14-16 NKJV

Joshua encourages & challenges the people of Israel to make a choice – will they worship & serve any god or the One True God.
Joshua had to command the Israelites to “throw away the gods” of their ancestors. Foreign gods & idols have to go!!
The Israelites were still worshiping idols despite experiencing many of the Lord’s great miracles and victories.
Joshua commanded the people to give undivided loyalty to the Lord as the only way to experience His presence and blessing in the future.
How easily they, & ourselves too if we are not careful, forget the great love, grace & goodness of the Lord. SELAH
Humanity’s repeated capacity to forget the benefits & blessings of the Lord is hard to fathom!!

Joshua was strongly exhorting the people to put away (throw off & cast aside) any form of idiolatry.
The first commandment was that they would have no other gods before the Lord (Exodus 20:3).
Joshua was desiring that Israel made their choice & commitment crystal clear. An informed & intentional choice – sincerity & truth.
He wanted them to be honest with themselves so that they could align & incline their hearts unto God alone (Joshua 24:23).
The Lord desires our undivided hearts, steadfast loyalty, faithful service & unwavering worship & devotion. SELAH

We too must be intentional & make those informed choices that will better enable us to serve the Lord.
We are to put off the old man (fleshly humanity) to serve the Lord (Ephesians 4:22; Colossians 3:9).
Our old ways of thinking & previous behaviour (attitudes & actions) need to be renewed (Romans 12:1-2).
Our acceptable worship (how we live our lives) is to offer our bodies daily as living sacrifices unto the Lord!!
Worship & serve the Lord & Him alone. Be ruthless in throwing off & casting aside anything that gets in the way. SELAH
Cling tightly to the Lord & be fully & faithfully committed to Him, His cause & His Church.
TODAY choose life, choose freedom, choose Christ. Hallelujah!!

For Reflection

  • In what ways does my heart get tugged or tempted in different directions other than the Lord?
  • What have I had to put away & cast aside to become more devoted to the Lord?
  • Meditate upon how we are called to be wholly devoted unto the Lord.

A song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that You held nothing back in securing my salvation,
Help & strengthen me to do the same as I serve & worship You alone.
Jesus, teach me to surrender fully to the Father’s will as You did,
Keep me close to & clinging to You, Your word, & Your ways.
Holy Spirit give me strength to cast off & leave behind anything that will hinder me from following the Lord,
Quicken my heart to stay fully focussed on Christ & faithful to Him.
This I ask in the mighty Name of Jesus.
