Responding to ethe Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Godhead & is God at work in the believer & in the world.
As a person the Holy Spirit has His own personality, ways of operating & making Himself known.
The Holy Spirit is therefore someone we must get to know & develop a relationship & deepening friendship with.
This means that Christians must daily respond to the Holy Spirit in a positive way.
How we do this & the differing responses people make to the Holy Spirit will be our TFD theme this week.

And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Galatians 5:24-25 NKJV

God lives in His people through the indwelling Spirit. In this sense He is ever with us.
We live (have been made alive) in the Spirit & are called to walk (fully align) in the Spirit.
This requires a daily, moment by moment, response on our part. It is your responsibility.
We must develop an increasing sensitivity to the Spirit’s presence & activity.
Daily we need to acknowledge His presence, seek His counsel & commune with Him in prayer.
A partnership (divine dance) of companionship & comfort where we follow His lead & guidance. SELAH

There are several differing ways one can respond to the Holy Spirit.

  • Ideally, we will be being filled, & continually being filled with the Spirit
  • We can resist the Holy Spirit
  • We can grieve the Holy Spirit
  • We can quench the Holy Spirit

We will look at each of these in turn over the coming days.

The Holy Spirit lives within us & comes upon us with power but He will never force Himself or His ways upon us.
We have free-will & the Lord will never violate this. He desires & requires both our consent & cooperation.
Living & walking in the Spirit necessitates remembering Him, recognising Him & positively responding to Him.
That is how, day by day, we cultivate our friendship & deepen our intimacy with the Holy Spirit.
Holy Spirit you are welcome in my life. Hallelujah!!

For Reflection

  • How easily & how readily do I respond to the Holy Spirit?
  • What am I doing to deepen my relationship & intimacy with the Holy Spirit?
  • Meditate upon how we are called to live & walk in the Holy Spirit.

A song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that You are the One True God,
Three In One & One in three – Father, Son & Holy Spirit.
Jesus, thank you for sending Your Spirit to live in me,
As my helper, comforter, advocate, counsellor & guide.
Holy Spirit thank you that You are for me & always seeking to lead me in the word, will & way of the Lord,
Help me to remember, recognise & respond to You with increasing sensitivity.
This I ask in the mighty Name of Jesus.
