Whom then shall we serve?

Life is full of choices & we make choices every day that impact both our present & our future.
Every choice matters & every choice counts as they all make a difference.
This is true in both our physical & spiritual lives which are intimately connected.
In this life we must choose who will we serve & worship? The One True God or foreign gods & idols!!
As we saw yesterday there are things we must leave behind & cast aside to faithfully serve the Lord!!
Consideration of the foreign gods & idols that plague us will be our focus for today.

“Now therefore, fear the Lord, serve Him in sincerity and in truth, and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the River and in Egypt. Serve the Lord! And if it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” So the people answered and said: “Far be it from us that we should forsake the Lord to serve other gods; Joshua 24:14-16 NKJV

Joshua challenges the people of Israel to make a choice about who they will serve & worship.
This is to be an informed intentional choice made in all truth & sincerity. Humbly & honesty.
They can serve the Lord or they can serve the gods of their ancestors or the gods of the Amorites.
They must make a decision & live their lives in full alignment with that decision. SELAH
Joshua knows where he stands & who he will serve but Israel must make the decision too.

The gods of their ancestors represent the stumbling blocks & failures of the past.
We all have things that have tripped us up & dragged us down in our past, leading to us falling away from God.
The good news for believers is that ‘In Christ’ your past is left behind & does not define you or your future. SELAH
Through salvation ‘In Christ’ the old has gone & the new has come as we live for God. Hallelujah!!
The gods of the Amorites are the current foreign gods & idols that are a present snare & temptation unto the Israelites.
We today must confront philosophical ideologies & the doctrine of demons in so many differing areas – e.g. gender, sexuality, race, ethics.
False gods & idols (idolatry) are all around us & we must stand strong & keep choosing the Lord & His ways.
We dwell in the land (world) they influence (pollute & corrupt) but we must keep our devotion pure unto the Lord. SELAH
Living in God’s world, God’s way & casting aside every false god & idol.

We are called to faithfulness unto the Lord & we must stand strong like Joshua.
We cannot rely upon the choices of others, instead we must make our own decision & stand by it. SELAH
The people of Israel in Joshua’s day were not prepared to forsake the Lord & that must be our choice too.
Israel struggled to wholeheartedly follow the Lord & Joshua warned them about this (Joshua 24:19-28).
Christians have the help & strength of the indwelling Spirit to equip, empower, lead & guide them.
Where Israel faltered & failed, we are wonderfully resourced to keep serving & worshipping the Lord.
TODAY keep choosing truth, keep choosing life, keep choosing freedom, choose Christ & keep choosing Him. Hallelujah!!

For Reflection

  • How confident & strong am I about taking a stand for the Lord & His truth & ways?
  • What have been the hardest snares & temptations I have had to face & overcome?
  • Meditate upon how we are called to forsake & abandon the gods & idolatry of our past & the gods & idols of our age.

A song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that You are the One True God,
That you call me to serve & worship You in all sincerity & truth.
Jesus, like You did, teach me to stand strong for the Lord,
To walk in His love, light & life & to follow his word, will & ways.
Holy Spirit thank you for Your constant presence in my life, equipping & empowering me to live for & love the Lord,
Give me wisdom & discernment to reject & cast aside every influence from the false gods & idolatry of this age.
This I ask in the mighty Name of Jesus.
