God’s lives dwells in the heart & lives of Christians by His Spirit (Romans 8:11-15).
The Lord deeply desires His children to experience the fullness of the Spirit (Ephesians 5:17-19) .
This requires our trust, obedience & submission alongside a healthy appetite & desire for more of God’s Spirit.
We have noted that the Holy Spirit is a person – the third person of the Godhead.
He therefore has a personality & experiences emotions. Joy, happiness, elation, pleasure.
He can also be displeased & experience sadness, pain, sorrow & disappointment.
It is therefore possible for people to grieve the Holy Spirit & this will be our focus for today.

And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Ephesians 4:30 NKJV

The Holy Spirit is in our lives to teach & train us to live in holiness. To be holy as the Lord is holy (1 Peter 1:16).
How we live matters as it affects the Holy Spirit who lives in us. Remember we are called to walk in step with Him (Galatians 5:25).
We can so easily take the Holy Spirit’s presence & power in our lives for granted & this grieves (deeply saddens) Him.
We can live in ungodly worldly ways & this will cause Him pain, sadness & disappointment.
We must be careful to live in a way that does not limit the influence & impact of the Holy Spirit in our lives. SELAH

Jesus was a man who was totally yielded to, & constantly full of, the Holy Spirit.
This was why he could move & flow in such powerful ways. He never ever grieved or quenched the Spirit. SELAH
Jesus lived & walked in perfect harmony with the Holy Spirit as His heart was fully submitted & surrendered to the Lord.
The Spirit came upon Jesus & constantly remained (John 1:32-33) upon Jesus because of His heart attitude & how He lived.
Time spent daily in the Father’s presence was the key to this. Intimacy unlocks imitation!! SELAH

Part of the Holy Spirit’s plan & purpose for us is to make us holy & more & more like Jesus (Romans 8:29).
Teaching & training us to live in God’s world, God’s way. This is one of the dance steps He wants us to learn.
This requires that we be willing partners – alert, aware & attentive to the Holy Spirit always.
Maintaining an open ear, constantly being on the lookout & readily heeding His promptings we will please Him rather than grieve Him.
Once again, we are to follow the example of Christ, our Lord & Master, spending time daily in our Heavenly Father’s presence.
Living with a constant awareness of the Spirit’s presence, peace & power & seeking to walk in a way that pleases Him.
Lord enable & empower me to be a child who brings you pleasure each day & walks in harmony with You & the Holy Spirit.
May your Spirit not just live within me but rest upon me more & more. Hallelujah!!

For Reflection

  • In what ways am I intentionally alert, aware & attentive to the Holy Spirit?
  • Am I truly becoming more holy (set apart & distinctive) unto the Lord?
  • Meditate upon how we can give either pleasure (great joy) or pain (grief & sorrow) to the Holy Spirit.

A song related to this theme:

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that You live in me by Your Spirit,
And that Your Holy Spirit comes to rest upon me with Your power to fulfil your purpose.
Jesus, thank you that You never ever grieved or quenched the Holy Spirit,
Teach me to increasingly walk in perfect harmony with Him as you did.
Holy Spirit keep me alert, aware & attentive to Your leading & guiding,
Develop in me a strengthening sensitivity to respond readily to You.
This I ask in the mighty Name of Jesus.
Amen
