Responding to the Holy Spirit

God’s dwells in believers by His Spirit (Romans 8:11-15) & He desires His children to be full & overflowing with the Spirit (Ephesians 5:17-19) .
We are not to grieve the Holy Spirit but live in a way that pleases Him. In full cooperation & by walking in perfect step with Him.
This requires humility & submission on our part as we trust & obediently follow His leading & guiding.
We are also encouraged & warned not to quench (stifle or suppress) the Holy Spirit’s’ fire & inspiration in our lives.
The Lord wants us to remain fully open to every gift, activity & mode of operation of his Spirit & this will be our focus for today.

Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise prophecies. 1 Thessalonians 5:19-20 NKJV

The word used here used in relation to the Holy Spirit is quench. It is a word related to extinguishing (putting out) fire.
We are not to subdue, restrain, extinguish, suppress or stifle the Holy Spirit’s divine & holy influence upon our lives.
The Lord’s desire is that we stay fully open to the flow of His Spirit to us, in us & through us.
We are therefore not to quench & snuff out the Spirit’s fire, passion, purity & power. SELAH
The Holy Spirit is to inspire our worship, witness & holy living & we must not prevent this!!
WARNING – there are heart attitudes, mindsets & behaviour that will quench the Spirit’s impact & influence in our lives or communities.

We must not ignore, despise, or scorn any true gift or activity of the Holy Spirit.
When we do this puts out & extinguishes the fire of the Holy Spirit.
In the verses above the Spirit’s activity & influence is being extinguished by people scorning the prophetic ministry.
We need the fire (inspiration) of the Holy Spirit to keep burning in our hearts & operating in our churches & communities.
We must therefore remain open to all the Holy Spirit’s gifts, activities & modes of operation. SELAH
They help us know & love the Lord more deeply & they also stimulate our growth & maturation as Christ’s disciples.

The Lord’s great desire is that we remain truly open & fully responsive to the inspiration, work & guidance of His Holy Spirit.
Embracing His passion, purity, fire & power. In this way we will be transformed from glory to glory (2 Corinthians 3:18).
Our character will be increasingly forged unto the character of Christ & His image strengthened & restored in us (Romans 8:29).
The Spirit’s gifts, along with encounters & experiences of & in the Spirit, are all a part of our maturing as a disciple of Christ & child of God.
Keep an open mind & responsive heart to the Spirit’s inspiration, passion for holiness & purifying power. Hallelujah!!

For Reflection

  • In what ways have I received gifts, experiences, encounters or ministry from the Holy Spirit?
  • Am I truly open & receptive to all the gifts, activities & modes of operation of the Holy Spirit?
  • Meditate upon how we are encouraged not to quench or extinguish the Holy Spirit.

A song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that You sent Your Spirit to live in me & that you send Your Spirit to rest on me,
With the desire & design to make me like Jesus & to make Jesus known.
Jesus, You demonstrated such sensitivity to the Holy Spirit,
Teach & train me to relate to the Spirit in a deeper more intimate way.
Holy Spirit thank you for the godly inspiration, impact & influence you continuously bring to me,
Develop in me an increasing openness to all the ways you lead, guide, gift & operate.
This I ask in the mighty Name of Jesus.
