Remember

In this season where remembering is to the fore we have begun thinking about the things we are to remember as the people of God.
We must constantly remember, & be ever mindful of, the Lord our Creator & Redeemer.
Israel, as the people of God, were constantly being reminded to remember the Lord’s Covenant & commandments.

Remember His marvellous works which He has done,
His wonders, and the judgments of His mouth,
O seed of Israel His servant,
You children of Jacob, His chosen ones!
He is the Lord our God;
His judgments are in all the earth.
Remember His covenant forever,
The word which He commanded, for a thousand generations. 1 Chronicles 16:12-15

God is the God of the Covenants.
The Covenants He makes with His people enable them to enjoy special relationship with Him & experience privileges from Him.
At the same time the Covenants mean we represent God in this world & have responsibility before Him for how we live & act.
God worked mighty wonders & works to fulfil all the promises within the Covenants.
The people of God are to be constantly remembering the wonders & works of the Lord (Psalm 7:11; 105:5).
Jesus is the one who mediates a New Covenant for us (Hebrews 12:24).
Let us never forget that great sacrifice. Keep remembering.

……and that you may remember and do all My commandments, and be holy for your God. Numbers 15:40

“Every commandment which I command you today you must be careful to observe, that you may live and multiply,
and go in and possess the land of which the Lord swore to your fathers. Deuteronomy 8:1

The people were also commanded to remember the Lord’s commandments & instructions.
They were to remember them so that they could live by them – Living in God’s world, God’s way.
The people found differing ways to memorize & mark the Scriptures in daily life.
Jesus instructs His people to make disciples of all the nations instructing them to observe all He has commanded (Matthew 28:18-20).
We need to remember & memorize, His commandments if we are to effectively disciple the nations!
Let’s keep remembering His commandments & our great commission.

We can also use memories & remembering to learn from the past experiences of ourselves or others.
Paul instructs the Corinthian church to be mindful of the mistakes & repeated failures the Jewish people made in rebelling against & rejecting the Lord (1 Corinthians 10).
Remembering from past failures is a powerful way to be successful in the present.
May the commandments & Covenant of God be ever present in our thoughts & memories.

For Reflection

  • What can I do to help me memorize & remember God’s word?
  • What am I doing to fulfil my Covenant responsibilities?
  • Mediate upon the wonderful works of the Lord.

A song related to this theme:

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Covenant keeping & faithful God,
Through the power of Your indwelling Spirit,
Give me daily help & strength to keep Your commandments & fulfil my Covenant responsibilities.
In the mighty name of Jesus,
Amen.
