Watchmen on the Walls

As the Lord’s soldiers (2 Timothy 2:3-4) we are stationed as sentries to watch the walls.
Watching & waiting as lookouts to see & hear what the Lord will show & say.
Watching to keep people & places safe & secure – ready to sound the trumpet warning.
It requires intent, it requires an alertness & it requires us to pay attention.

I will stand my watch
And set myself on the rampart,
And watch to see what He will say to me,
And what I will answer when I am corrected. Habakkuk 2:1-2

Habakkuk stands at his assigned watch – his ‘lookout tower’ & ‘observation post’.
He stands & sets himself at his particular station. Carrying out his duty with full & proper responsibility.
He knows the place he is to watch from (the rampart) & the people / nation (Israel) & city (Jerusalem) he is to watch over.
Habakkuk is aware of the position & posture he must adapt to enable vigilance in his watch.

Habakkuk watches to hear what God will say.
How interesting is that – the eyes set to hear!
Habakkuk has the awareness that his spiritual senses are necessary for his watch.
He is ready to both see (via vision) & hear (via prophetic word) what God will show & say.
Those spiritual senses are set to ‘scanning mode’. Ready to receive.

As Habakkuk hears from the Lord he is ready to respond.
He waits to hear from God before attempting to address the complaints of people in the midst of adversity, hardship & suffering.
He awaits the NOW word from God to address the needs of the day.
Habakkuk seeks fresh revelation from the Lord to makes sense of all he is experiencing (Psalm 119:130).
May we too be those who are rightly positioned & postured to receive the Lord’s revelation in & for our day.

For Reflection

  • Am I in the right position & taking up the correct posture?
  • Are my spiritual senses fine tuned & set to scan for the Lord’s revelation.
  • Mediate upon where your rampart is & what your watch entails.

A song relating to the theme:

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Thank you for Your unerring ceaseless watch over me,
Through the power of Your indwelling Spirit sharpen & strengthen my spiritual senses.
I yield my heart to receive Your truth,
Position & posture me aright to receive Your revelation.
In the mighty name of Jesus,
Amen.
