Unto us a Son is given

Mary was God’s chosen vessel to bring forth Jesus the Messiah.
God’s sovereign grace & choice meeting & merging with willing human submission.
The ‘overshadowing’ presence & power of the Holy Spirit bringing forth the miraculous conception.
Mystery & miracle paving the way for the Saviour to come. What a mighty marvel.

Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth,
to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David.
The virgin’s name was Mary.
And having come in, the angel said to her, “Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women!” Luke 1:26-28 NKJV

The Angels Annanciation

The angel Gabriel carried amazing world-changing news from God to Mary.
He who came from the presence of God (Luke 1:19) brings tidings of the presence of God to be miraculously conceived within her.
What a wondrous work of divine grace & favour. Nothing could ever be the same again.
This promised Son, the very Son of God himself, will be great & will rule over an eternal kingdom (Luke 1:32, 33,35).
Mystery & miracle combining as the ancient promises & prophecies of the great prophet Isaiah come to fulfillment (Isaiah 9:6-7).
No promise of God is ever made without the power to fulfill its purpose.
He is a miracle working God who can do what we would deem impossible.

Mary’s humble willing response

Mary receives the word & promise of God with a willing obedience.
Whilst she questions the how she never doubts the what.
She wrestles with the method but in faith fully accepts what it means.
Where Zechariah had struggled to believe the angels word (Luke 1:20) Mary will humbly accept the miracle.
She will believe even where she doesn`t fully understand. Content to live with the mystery.
God in his amazing grace even provides a sign by revealing the news of Elizabeth’s miraculous gift of John.
The God of miracles can bring fruitfulness to all our barren places.

Then Mary said, “Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word.”
And the angel departed from her. Luke 1:38

May we like Mary respond to every word & promise from God with a receptive willing heart.
Humbly receiving, believing & following even when we don’t fully understand.
Ready to be used powerfully in the purposes of the Lord.

For Reflection

  • What has the Holy Spirit conceived in you?
  • What is God bringing to birth through your life service, gifts & ministry?
  • What promises of God are you waiting to be fulfilled?
  • Mediate upon the faith, humility & submission of Mary.

A song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you for the great gift of Christ.
Your great Son, our Saviour & eternal Lord & King.
May I humbly receive & in faith embrace every word & promise you make to me,
And like Mary may my life constantly make a way for Jesus to come forth.
In the mighty name of Jesus,
