Unto us a Son is given
Mary was God’s sovereign choice to bring forth Jesus the Messiah.
She was impregnated with the Holy Seed (Genesis 3:15; Galatians 3:16) through the ‘overshadowing’ presence & power of the Holy Spirit.
Mystery & miracle paving the way for the Saviour to come. What a mighty marvel.
Then Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I do not know a man?”
And the angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you,
and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One
who is to be born will be called the Son of God.
Now indeed, Elizabeth your relative has also conceived a son in her old age;
and this is now the sixth month for her who was called barren.
For with God nothing will be impossible.”
Then Mary said, “Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word.”
And the angel departed from her. Luke 1:34-38 NKJV
Mary humbly submitted to the ‘overshadowing’ of the Holy Spirit.
The power of the Highest (God) touched her bringing a new life into being in her womb.
The Life to bring life to the sons of men, the saviour of all humanity.
The very Son of God himself. The promised Seed to free us from sin & death & deliver us from evil.
God made man, Immanuel – God with us (Matthew 1:23; Isaiah 7:14).
I wonder what that experience was like. Overwhelming & mind blowing for sure.
The original language means a haze of brilliancy, a shining cloud (Shekinah Glory).
Mary was invested with a divine gift of supernatural influence.
The Holy power of the Highest God meeting & merging with the great humility of Mary’s obedient heart.
A moment of divine majesty & human meekness. So beautiful.
Life changing & world changing at the same time.
It would have taken some time for the encounter & experience to fully sink in – if it ever did!!
A while longer for the evidence to show as her belly swelled – her faith made stronger at this point.
More time too until she felt the Holy Child move within – her faith fully sure & certain now.
The promise of the angels words now bearing rapidly growing fruit.
It often takes time for the promises of God to be fulfilled.
God is ever faithful & never late. We have to trust & obey in the wait.
Christ was sent forth at the perfect time (Galatians 4:4) to save as many people (in all of history) as possible.
God’s sovereignty & human responsibility combing & partnering to make it happen.
The plans & purposes of God being above & beyond anything we could ever hope or imagine (Isaiah 55:8-9 ; Ephesians 3:20).
- Will we allow the power of God to touch & transform us?
- Will we allow the words & promises of God to germinate & grow in us?
- Will we be faithful & true in the waiting?
- Mediate upon the wonder of being ‘overshadowed’ by the Lord.
A song related to the theme:
Thank you for the great gift of Christ our Saviour.
Touch us afresh with the power & presence of Your Spirit,
That we might be fruitful in Your service.
Give us the faith & patience to inherit Your promises,
And bear lasting fruit that glorifies You.
In the mighty name of Jesus,
