God – Our Refuge and Strength
The consistent message of the Scriptures is that God is ever the help & strength of His people.
He constantly protects, provides, leads, guides & watches over His people.
This week we will journey from Genesis to Revelation to explore the reoccurring ample evidence
Then let us arise and go up to Bethel; and I will make an altar there to God,
who answered me in the day of my distress and has been with me in the way which I have gone.”
Genesis 35:3 NKJV
Jacob was able to testify that God had constantly been with him.
Like Hagar earlier, & many others after, God was always watching over & making a way for Jacob.
God had answered Jacob in the day of his distress (fleeing his brother Esau) & blessed him in the midst of his earthly struggles.
Jacob realised God had been with him wherever he had gone. Seeing, hearing & knowing ALL.
Watching over his affairs & blessing him even in spite of his repeated scheming & deceptive ways.
The call & purpose of God over Jacob’s life being the source of the blessing rather that Jacob’s questionable attitude & actions.
The call, anointing, favour & blessing of God are because of God’s abundant grace & mercy & never based upon our own goodness or service.
God is good to us, all of the time. Mercy, mercy, mercy rather than any merit of our own!
Jacob’s response was to worship & offer sacrifice upon an altar at Bethel (House of God).
He prepared & purified both himself & his household.
He made sure they put aside every distraction & every form of idolatry.
Note how the manifold presence of the Lord increased in their midst after this act of obedience & devotion.
The presence & power of God was a terror (fear of God) to the cities around them!! (nb cf. Acts 5:13).
God is constantly our help & strength & is watching over us but His great desire is for clean vessels to work through.
Private purity is the source of public power!!
It is a people of purity that will powerfully impact this world for the Lord.
Christ provides the great sacrifice that bestows the blessing, favour & anointing of God upon, & over, our lives.
In response we daily prepare & purify ourselves to bring the sacrifice of lives laid down in service to God (Romans 12:1-2).
We continually offer the sacrifice of praise & good works (Hebrews 13:15-16).
God walks with us, talks with us, constantly watches over us & pours forth blessing upon blessing into, & through, our lives.
Blessed to be a blessing God is ever our refuge & strength. Hallelujah!
- Do I have the testimony & awareness that God is with me everywhere I have been?
- In what ways do I prepare & purify myself?
- Mediate upon the amazing love & care of our Heavenly Father.
A song related to this theme:
Thank you for Your great love & care,
Thank you that You are ever our help & strength.
Thank you that you daily walk with us & talk with us,
Lead us now & evermore.
In the mighty name of Jesus,
