God – Our constant Refuge and Strength
We have repeatedly seen that God is our rock, refuge, strength, shield, shelter & stronghold.
Like others before him God promised Joshua His constant support & strength (Joshua 1:5).
Joshua, the man who will take Israel into the promised land is, like Joseph, another prototype of Christ.
Jesus also promises His disciples (those who follow Him) that He will never leave them or forsake them.
He is constantly present as our refuge & strength.
And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.
Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen. Matthew 28:18-20 NKJV
Jesus promises to always be with His disciples. How amazing is that.
He had shared life with them for three years – eating, walking & talking together day by day.
Now as He ascended on high to return to the Father He was going to be with His people through the Holy Spirit (John 14:15-24; 16:5-15).
As He was with them after Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4) so He is with us now.
The mighty works & miracles they performed (recorded in the book of Acts) proved without doubt that Jesus was with then as He had promised.
World & Church history confirm the same great truth.
God is with us ‘In Christ’ through His Spirit & He will never leave or forsake us. Hallelujah!!
The writer of the book of Hebrews reminds us that God is ever with us (Hebrews 13:5).
This is quoting Deuteronomy 31:6
“Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God,
He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you.”
The author of Hebrews, inspired by the Spirit is reminding God’s people of exactly the same great truth.
God is with them & will never forsake them.
The original great promise was to Joshua as the new leader of God’s people.
I will never leave you or forsake you – such a powerful promise & a constant encouragement.
God went before him, was all around him & backed him up as his rearguard.
It was true for Joshua & it is true for us. Hallelujah!
God is ever with us, our constant companion, our great refuge & strength.
With us through His word which instructs & illuminates our path through life.
With us through His indwelling Spirit who leads & guides us in His Word, Will & Ways.
Christ before me, Christ behind me, Christ all around me – YES LORD!
So, so good. Thank you Lord.
- Do I experience Jesus’ constant presence?
- How am I relating to & responding to, the Word & Spirit right now?
- Mediate upon Jesus who is ever present with those who follow Him.
A song related to this theme:
Thank you for Your great promise to be ever with us.
Thank you that You made that possible through Christ Your Son & our Saviour,
Thank you for the great gift of Your Spirit.
Keep us ever mindful of Your Word which instructs & illuminates,
And keep us ever aware of, & deeply sensitive to, your Spirit who leads & guides us.
In the mighty name of Jesus,
