The God who Forgives

God is the God of forgiveness – ‘El No-say’.
It flows through His great love, compassion, grace & mercy.
The people of Israel were repeatedly in need of God’s great mercy & forgiveness (2 Chronicles 7:14; Daniel 9).
We find it through Christ our wonderful Saviour.

Who is a God like You,
Pardoning iniquity
And passing over the transgression of the remnant of His heritage?
He does not retain His anger forever,
Because He delights in mercy.
19 He will again have compassion on us,
And will subdue our iniquities.
You will cast all our sins
Into the depths of the sea. Micah 7:18-19 NKJV

The prophet Micah highlights the uniqueness of the One True God.
The great wonder of a God that freely forgives.
God delights to release his mercy & compassion.
In pardoning His people God lifts the sins of the people, carries them off & casts them away.
The root of the words that Micah uses reveal that God bears the sin of the people away.
A prophetic pointer to Christ who bears & carries our sins upon the cross (1 Peter 2:24).

We are pardoned through the person of Christ our perfect, spotless, sinless Saviour (2 Corinthians 5:21).
God was in Christ reconciling the world unto himself (2 Corinthians 5:19).
God ‘In Christ’ carrying away & bearing up our sins, & the sins of the world.
Just incredible. The mighty power of His forgiving love.
The depths of His mercy, grace & compassion (Romans 11:33).

That result of that pardon is freedom through God’s forgiving love.
God’s forgiveness is a mighty fount of freeing love & grace.
It never runs dry & it constantly restores & redeems as it washes us clean & makes us whole again.
In the midst of it’s cleansing, healing stream we are restored to relationship with God our Creator & Redeemer.
It is our great privilege ‘In Christ’. Pardoned through His person may we never, ever take it for granted.
Forgiven in Christ by the God who forgives. Hallelujah!

For Reflection

  • Am I living in the freedom of His great forgiveness right now?
  • How deeply do I treasure the forgiveness of the Lord?
  • Mediate upon ‘El no say’ the God who forgives.

A song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you You are the God who forgives.
Thank you that we are forgiven by the blood of Christ,
The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.
Through the power & presence of the indwelling Spirit,
May we walk worthy of our great Saviour,
To the glory of Your great & glorious Name.
In the mighty name of Jesus,
