What feeds your Soul?

Our souls are a precious, priceless gift from God & they need careful & tender care.
The way we care for our souls influencing & impacting every aspect of our lives.
The people we spend time with, the priorities we make & the pursuits & pleasures we seek all play a big part in the nourishment of our souls.
However God alone can bring life & immortality to our souls!!

who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works,
but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began,
but has now been revealed by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ,
who has abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel,
to which I was appointed a preacher, an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles.
2 Timothy 1:9-11 NKJV

The people we spend time with have a huge influence & impact upon us as we become like those we spend time with. We learn from one another just by being together.
This is because we mimic & copy many of the attitudes & actions we encounter.
Am I the influencer or the influenced? Choose your friends & those you hang out with carefully.
As Paul exhorted those he was writing to – Imitate me as I imitate Christ (1 Corinthians 4:16, 11:1).
Are those we imitate, themselves imitators of Christ?
Time spent with Jesus is never wasted time. Time in His presence tells in every way.
Cultivate the healthy habit of pursuing His presence as it will bring rich nourishment to your soul.

We have the constant challenge of juggling many competing priorities in life.
Our relationship with God, family, work, church, your ministry, hobbies & many other things too.
As C.S. Lewis said first things must come first.

Put first things first and we get second things thrown in: put second things first & we lose both first and second things.

We must get our priorities right, & keep them right, if we are to truly nurture our souls well.
This is an area of life where getting the balance right is key.

Pursuits & Pleasures

God is a good, good Father & He wants us to have fun & enjoy pleasure.
Every good & perfect gift comes from Him (James 1:17). Good & perfect gifts for us to experience & enjoy.
There are leisure pursuits & pleasures that will feed our souls & there are leisure pursuits & pleasures that will steal from our souls.
We need to discern the difference & like Eric Liddel, the runner, know what it is that brings us great pleasure whilst at the same time bringing the Father great pleasure.
There is good pleasure & there is guilty pleasure & i think you know the difference!!
The context of the pleasure is so very often the key. SELAH.
(“God made me fast. And when I run, I feel His pleasure.”)
The person who can bring you true & lasting pleasure – the pleasure of eternal everlasting life is Christ alone.
Make Him your first priority & chief pleasure in life. It will bring rich abundance to your soul.

For Reflection

  • In what ways am I pursuing His presence?
  • Am I prioritising well? Who do I hang out with most & why?
  • Meditate upon the people you keep, the priorities you make & the pleasures you seek.

A song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you for the life & immortality we find ‘In Christ’ the Resurrection & the Life.
Through the power & presence of Your indwelling Spirit,
Help me to pursue You above all else & make You the first priority of my life.
In You there is rich & lasting pleasure forevermore.
In the mighty name of Jesus,
