What feeds your Soul?

Proverbs chapter 4 offers priceless biblical wisdom on feeding our souls.
These being our heart, mind, ears, eyes, lips & feet.
As ever biblical wisdom is practical & powerful.
It is about training our senses & bodies to tenderly care for our inner life.

My son, give attention to my words;
Incline your ear to my sayings.
Do not let them depart from your eyes;
Keep them in the midst of your heart;
For they are life to those who find them,
And health to all their flesh.
Keep your heart with all diligence,
For out of it spring the issues of life.
Put away from you a deceitful mouth,
And put perverse lips far from you.
Let your eyes look straight ahead,
And your eyelids look right before you.
Ponder the path of your feet,
And let all your ways be established.
Do not turn to the right or the left;
Remove your foot from evil. Proverbs 4:20-27

Heart – desires

We are to keep guard over our hearts at all times.
It is a spring & fountain of life which must be kept pure & unpolluted.

For reflection – What is occupying our thought life?  What do I ponder upon?

Mind – thinking

It is so important what we set our minds & focus upon.
The Scriptures encourage us to set our minds on thinks above (Colossians 3:2; Philippians 4:8) & our chief focus is to be upon the Lord.
Our thinking impacts all our attitudes & actions.

For reflection – What is occupying our thought life? What do I ponder upon?

Ears – listening

There are so many competing voices in this world.
Each one vying & desperately trying to get our response.
The instructions & inspirations of the Lord are the key here.
Those laid out in the Scriptures & those spoken unto us from the Lord.
Speak Lord for your servant is listening (1 Samuel 3:9).

For reflection – What is grabbing our attention right now? Whose voice are we listening to firstly, & the most?

Eyes – sight / looking

Our eyes play an important role in setting us upon paths. They direct our steps.
We must learn to keep them looking straight ahead & make sure they stay set & fully focused on the Lord’s paths. There are many paths in life, alongside many constant distractions. The easiest paths are not always the most reliable or even the best for us!!
Job made a covenant with His eyes (Job 31:1). There were things he denied them!
We can be constantly looking all around to assess the myriad of worldly options or alternatively we can set our gaze to walk in God’s world, God’s way.

For reflection – What are we looking at & allowing our eyes to access?

Lips – speech

Our speech reveals the overflow of our hearts (Matthew 12:34).
When it comes to speech pause for a moment to T.H.I.N.K.
Is is true, helpful, necessary, inspired & kind?
If it is not one, or preferably more, of those things then do not bother saying it.
Our words are powerful & can either bless or curse (Proverbs 18:21) & the Lord desires that our speech be full of grace & purity (Colossians 4:6).

For reflection – What is flowing forth in our speech? What does it reveal of us?

Feet – the places we go & frequent

Our feet lead us to places & people.
Your character & choices will determine the direction of your steps.
Without courage, discernment & bold godly decision making they may lead us astray.
Stay strong, stay straight, stay on the path of the Lord.

For reflection – Where, & to who, are our feet leading us?

A song related to this theme:
