The Power of Scripture

Scripture benefits the Christian in so may ways. It is hugely formative for us as disciples of Christ.
God in His goodness & great mercy has provided us with a plethora of resources in addition to the Scriptures.
Scripture must take the priority & first place above those other resources.
With the help of the Holy Spirit Scripture must be embraced so that it lays hold of us & brings about godly change & transformation.
To do that we must spend time & effort embracing it & seeking to apply it wisely to our lives

Only be strong and very courageous, that you may observe to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you;
do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may prosper wherever you go.
This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it.
For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:7-9 NKJV

We are blessed with the Canon of Scripture containing the Old & New Testaments.
Joshua, & the people of Israel, only had the initial Commandments of God & then the Torah (fist 5 books of the Bible) which Moses compiled.
Even in his day Joshua was encouraged to meditate constantly – day & night – on the Word of God.
This is still a great discipline & practice for us today. Start the day with Scripture & end the day with Scripture.
Reflect & meditate upon it in the period in-between.

Joshua was encouraged to attend to, pay attention to & apply the Word of God to his own & Israel’s communal life.
As he did so the promise was prosperity & success.
He, & Israel, if obedient would live successfully in God’s world, God’s way.
This is not a promise of increasing wealth, health & happiness but rather the recipe for living successfully for God in this world.
The Scriptures point the way. The Spirit provides the power & strength.

Whenever, & wherever, we align our hearts & lives with Scripture it will bring a blessing.
It’s revelation providing a lamp to our feet & a light to our path (Psalm 119:105).
By engaging with Scripture day & night, & meditating on it in-between, we best position ourselves for success.
Keep dwelling upon Scripture, thinking & reflecting upon it, so that it sinks in & penetrates deep within us.
They say a well worn Bible will mean the user is in good shape!!
May it truly be the book we live with, & by, so that it directs our paths through life & delivers us godly success & prosperity.
Live a blessed life & prosper by daily engaging with Scripture through the power of the Spirit.
Attend to it, pay attention to it, apply it – DAILY.

For Reflection

  • Am I familiar with the whole of the Scriptures or do I stick to my own favoured sections?
  • Do I readily engage the 3 A’s when it comes to Scripture – attend, attention & application?
  • Meditate on the blessings that Scripture brings to our lives.

A song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
We thank you for the power of Your Word,
That the Bible testifies of Christ & reveals Him & all His ways.
Holy Spirit keep revealing Jesus to us in, & through, the Scriptures,
Teach us to mediate well upon Your word,
So that it penetrates deep within us.
May it find fertile soil in our hearts & lives.
This we ask in the mighty Name of Jesus.
