The Great Gift of the Holy Spirit

God is ever generous & gracious to us because He is a good, good Father.
Every good & perfect gift comes from Him (James 1:17).
The best of gifts are our salvation ‘In Christ’ & the great gift of the Holy Spirit.
Our loving Father desires that we hunger & thirst for His Spirit.

“So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.
For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.
If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone?
Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish? Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion?
If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!” Luke 11:9-13

In the context of teaching His disciples how to pray Jesus encourages them to ask for the Holy Spirit.
We are to ask, seek & knock & keep on asking, seeking & knocking.
We are to be those who pursue intimacy with the Holy Spirit.
Having a continuous desire for more of the Holy Spirit.
Our Heavenly Father will gladly give us the good things we ask Him for.

If you don’t ask you are unlikely to receive!
God is the best of good, good Fathers & He loves to bless His beloved children with good things.
The prayer & cry for more of the Holy Spirit is one He never misses or ignores.
God’s responses to our prayers are yes, no, wait & maybe.
The response to the prayer for the Holy Spirit is a resounding yes – every time.

Jesus makes it clear that those who keep on asking will receive.
Those who keep on seeking will find & those who keep on knocking on the door will have it opened to them.
As we keep pursuing the Holy Spirit we receive more of Him & from Him.
We find a deepening friendship & relationship & we are invited into greater intimacy. How wonderful is that?
It requires our determination, dedication & discipline to keep pursuing the Holy Spirit with patient persistence.
Will we be those who seek & pursue His presence. He who dares wins!!!

For Reflection

  • In what ways am I pursuing intimacy with the Holy Spirit?
  • How am I asking, seeking & knocking for more of the Holy Spirit in my life?
  • Meditate on the generosity, goodness & graciousness of our perfect Heavenly Father

A song related to this theme:

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
We thank You for the great gift of Your Holy Spirit,
Stir up o Lord our hunger & thirst for You & Your Spirit.
Stimulate our appetite for deeper intimacy with You.
This we ask in the mighty Name of Jesus.
Amen
