The Breath-taking Beauty of Unity

The Godhead – Father, Son & Holy Spirit – are forever united in love.
This is reflected in the Trinitarian dance of love – perichoresis. Perfect harmonious relationship of love & unity.
As the three in one & one in three live in love & unity so they desire that the family of God does too.
Like Father, like sons & daughters!

“I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who [j]will believe in Me through their word;
that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us,
that the world may believe that You sent Me. And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one:
I in them, and You in Me; that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me. John 17:20-23

Jesus passionately prayed for the unity of the Church & family of God in John 17.
The Great High Priest`s heartfelt desire & earnest prayer for the Church in all ages.
That they would be one – united – as the Father, Son & Spirit are one.
When we live in love & unity TOGETHER we reflect His glory.
Disunity & divisions in the body of Christ discredit & weaken our testimony & witness.

Unity came at a great price. It cost Christ dearly. How highly do we treasure it?
We are called to be at one with God & also our brothers & sisters in Christ.
Alongside this we are also to live in harmony with our fellow humanity & also all creation.
A high calling indeed which we need the Lord’s constant help & strength to achieve.

In, & through Christ, we are united in one body & one spirit & unity is maintained through his Spirit (Ephesians 4:1-6).
If we are in step with the Spirit we will reflect the love & unity of God.
When we live in love & unity we are expressing the culture & values of heaven upon this earth.
It is one of the ways we help to bring heaven to this earth.
May we fulfil Christ’s great prayer for unity & do all we can to live in unity & love.

For Reflection

  • In what ways am I seeking to maintain & build unity?
  • What state is my heart in towards those who hold different theological views or Christian practices to myself?
  • Meditate on the unity of the Trinity & how that is to be reflected in the body of Christ

A song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
We thank You for the love & unity you forever demonstrate in the Godhead.
Through the presence & power of the Holy Spirit keep us humble & help us to live in the unity you desire for us.
Use us to break down the schisms & divisions within your body here on earth.
This we ask in the mighty Name of Jesus.
