The Breath-taking Beauty of Unity
The Godhead live in an unbroken eternal harmonious unity.
Whilst this is forever true of the Trinity it has sadly not been the case for the Church.
Church history teaches us that maintaining the unity of the Spirit has been a massive challenge for the people of God.
Schisms & divisions over doctrine & practice are all too common occurrences.
O how we need the humility that is key to maintaining the unity of the Spirit.
Therefore if there is any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit,
if any affection and mercy, fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord,
of one mind. Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each
esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.
Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus,…… Philippians 4:1-5
The Apostle Paul again here highlights the key connection between humility & unity.
He exhorts the Philippian church to be humble & to honour one another as much as possible.
Esteeming others as better than ourselves & taking the lowest place is the example Paul commends.
He then goes onto to show that that is exactly what Christ di in coming to this earth to be our saviour.
Christ humbling Himself & taking the lowest place enabled us to share in the unity of the Godhead.
Christ is our master & model. We must follow in His footsteps & learn form Him.
However a quick glimpse at Church unity in 2022 would suggest we still have much to learn!!
If we are to be a true community of the Spirit, living & walking in humility & love, we must truly humble ourselves afresh.
As the Moravians say – In essentials unity, in non-essentials liberty, in all things charity & love.
Christ gave everything to make us one with God & one with one another.
Will we humble ourselves & learn from Him to keep that unity?
Will we allow the Spirit to stretch our hearts to love more?
Will we honour others above ourselves, our preferences, our doctrine & our practice?
Unity for the Church, the redeemed of God, remains a challenge.
You can be part of the change & transformation that is needed. God can give us the grace to get, & stay, low!!
Love & humility in every way, every day. This is the way of Christ & it needs to be the way of His Church.
- How easy do I find it to bestow honour & respect upon others?
- How readily do I take the lowest place?
- Meditate on the vital importance of humility when it comes to maintaining unity.
A song related to this theme:
We thank You for the blessing of the unity we share we You & Your people.
Through the power of Your Spirit truly humble us under Your mighty hand,
Teach us to love in far deeper measure,
So that we might keep the unity of the Spirit,
This we ask in the mighty Name of Jesus.
