Holy Week Devotions – Cleansing the Temple
As he approached Jerusalem Jesus wept over it & then prophesied over the holy city.
Prophetically he could see the future destruction (AD 70) that lay in store.
In Christ – the Prince of Peace – the people had an opportunity to secure peace.
Alas they could not see it or perceive it. Their Saviour was visiting but this missed it!
Then He went into the temple and began to drive out those who bought and sold in it,
saying to them, “It is written, ‘My house is a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a ‘den of thieves.’ ”
And He was teaching daily in the temple. But the chief priests, the scribes, and the leaders of the people sought to destroy Him,
and were unable to do anything; for all the people were very attentive to hear Him. Luke 19:45-48
Moved with deep passion & zealous desire for the temple to truly fulfill the Father`s purpose Jesus acts in a dramatic way.
In driving out the merchants He brings disruption & a halt to the sacrificial system.
This itself being prophetic for what He was to do on the cross a few days later.
Jesus was about to make the greatest intercession for the nations upon the cross.
The intercession to enable their salvation & redemption.
He himself was the sacrificial lamb to cleanse the sin of humanity (John 1:29).
No further sacrifices would be necessary after Calvary (Hebrews 9:12).
In carrying out this prophetic act Jesus sealed His earthly fate.
The religious leaders would quickly move to destroy Him.
God’s house – the temple, His dwelling place – was always intended to be a house of prayer for all the nations.
We as God’s new humanity ‘In Christ’ are TOGETHER being built up into a new holy temple unto the Lord (Ephesians 2:17-21).
A dwelling place for God through His Spirit & intercessors for the nations.
May we prove truly worthy of this incredible privilege & calling.
The nations truly need our prayers & intercessions in this prolonged season of crisis upon crisis!!
Rise up to pray.
- What might Jesus need to cleanse in my life right now?
- Pray for the nations today.
- Lay hold of the peace & salvation that Jesus brings to you.
- Meditate on your body as the temple of the Holy Spirit & yourself as a part of God’s new Holy Temple.
A song related to this theme:
May we truly be a house of prayer for the nations.
Lord give us wisdom, insight & understanding to pray for the nations in this prolonged season of global crisis.
Holy Spirit intercede through us according to the will of God.
In Jesus Mighty name.
