The Just Shall Live by Faith

The ‘just’ are those who are made right in the sight of God through the saving sacrifice of Christ.
They stand in right relationship with God through the death & resurrection of Christ.
They are justified (just as if they had never sinned) & made righteous (in right standing & relationship with God) through faith in the saving work of Christ.
That faith is a precious gift from God & the start of a daily, & lifelong, faith journey with Jesus.

Now it is clear that no one is justified [that is, declared free of the guilt of sin and its penalty,
and placed in right standing] before God by the Law, for “The righteous (the just, the upright) shall live by faith.” Galatians 3:11

As we have noted saving faith is just the starting point of our salvation.
Firstly faith is a gift. A precious & priceless free gift of God’s grace & love (Ephesians 2:8-9).
It is to received & activated. It must be put into practice & used – put to work!!
It must focus its attention, & keep it’s attention, on Christ the saviour (Hebrews 12:2).
May we put the gift of faith to good work – the works of the gospel & kingdom (James 2:14-26).

Secondly faith is like a seed. Once activated (planted & germinated) it must grow & develop to maturity & fruitfulness (2 Peter 3:18).
That means keeping it in the right environment – in touch & close contact with Jesus & other believers.
It must be cultivated in fertile soil – a receptive & believing heart (Luke 18:14-15).
It must be fed the right nutrients – the word of God & the Spirit’s inner leading & guidance.
To fulfil its potential & mature to fruitfulness it must be tended carefully & provided with light & warmth.
Constantly kept in the presence of Father, Son & Spirit.
May our faith keep growing (2 Corinthians 10:15) to maturity & fruitfulness.

Thirdly faith is like a muscle. It grows, strengthens & develops with constant use (Colossians 2:6-7).
It must be exercised – daily & repeatedly. It is designed to, & intended for, increase & strengthening (Luke 17:5).
This requires discipline, dedication & diligence. Alongside attention to detail.
The right environment, nutrients & training (exercise regime) all play an important role (community of believers, word & spirit, prayer & praise, kingdom activity).
May we be those who start with little faith but develop it to great faith (Matthew 8:26; Luke 7:9)!!
The ‘just’ indeed live by faith but they are to grow & develop in it too.
We live by faith, grow in faith & go in faith to make Jesus known. Holy Spirit help & strengthen us.

For reflection

  • Are the right conditions present in my life for my faith to keep growing & developing?
  • In what ways am I growing & developing in my faith right now?
  • Meditate on the nature of faith – seed, gift, muscle.

A song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you for the great love revealed in Christ through the gift of saving faith.
Jesus lead us daily in the journey of faith.
Holy Spirit help us to grow & strengthen our faith,
That we might mature & live fruitful lives for You.
This we ask in the mighty Name of Jesus.
