Encourage One Another

God’s great desire is that we all grow & mature in Christlikeness (Ephesians 4:11-16).
This is true for individuals & for communities of believers.
Edification & encouragement are vital for that process to happen.
They are a powerful catalyst that quickens the process.
Everybody grows with frequent encouragement & affirmation.

Again, do you think that we excuse ourselves to you? We speak before God in Christ. But we do all things, beloved, for your edification.
2 Corinthians 12:19

And this also we pray, that you may be made complete. Therefore I write these things being absent, lest being present I should use sharpness, according to the authority which the Lord has given me for edification and not for destruction.
Finally, brethren, farewell. Become complete. Be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you.
2 Corinthians 13:9-11

Paul’s great motivating factor in all his ministry & mission work was to build people & churches up.
He encouraged, edified, comforted & affirmed individual believers & the churches he planted or visited.
His desire & constant prayer was that people be made complete in Christ.
He knew that he was contributing to the good work that God had begun in believers & communities (Philippians 1:6).
Paul recognized the authority invested in him to build up Christians & the Church of God.
He was ever seeking the common good & mutual edification of all concerned.

Paul also knew that he was operating in & exercising the authority of Christ.
He used that authority to build up rather than tear down.
That same authority to build up the people of God has been invested in you & me.
It is all too easy to criticise, tear down & destroy people & things.
It takes real intent, skill & sensitivity to build up at all times
Christ carries all authority as the the master builder & bespoke architect of our lives.
He wants to use you & me to build up & encourage His people.

We are all therefore called to & entrusted with the ministry of encouragement.
The Church of God should be the most encouraged & affirmed people on the earth.
Certain individuals have been graced with the gift of encouragement (Romans 12:8).
They are role models & examples who equip & empower God’s people in this task.
Encouragement & edification is a body ministry which certain parts of that body excel in.
Get to know one of the specialists in encouragement & hang out with them – it will do you good!!
May we be faithful to keep building one another you & so fulfil the law of Christ.

For Reflection

  • Who has been a great encourager & encouragement to you? Give them thanks today.
  • Who is God asking you to intentionally affirm & encourage at this time? Send them an encouraging message today.
  • Meditate on the authority invested in you to build up.

An Encouraging Song:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you for the natural & spiritual power of encouragement & edification.
Lord Jesus keep us safe & secure on the solid rock & sure foundation that is You alone.
Holy Spirit give us the daily strength to keep freely flowing in encouragement & affirmation,
That Your people may be truly built up & matured ‘In Christ’.
This we ask in, & through, the mighty Name of Jesus.
