Wholehearted Devotion

The Lord gives His all for us & He desires our wholehearted devotion in response.
The Scriptures exhort us to wholeheartedly Love the Lord, Trust the Lord, Obey the Lord,
Praise the Lord & Work for the Lord.
Today we will explore what it means to wholeheartedly love the Lord.

“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one!
You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. Deuteronomy 6:4-5

“Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?”
Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’
This is the first and great commandment. Matthew 22:36-38

The Shema which was central & of most importance to the Jews & Jewish life called for wholehearted love of the Lord.
God was to be the most important priority & central to all aspects of life.
Everything within us – body, soul & spirit – is to be devoted to loving the Lord.
Jesus doubled down on this when asked about the most important aspects of the law & commandments of God.
Loving God with all we have takes first place & is of greatest importance.
It is expressing the passion of our hearts, the inclinations of our minds & the energy of our being unto the Lord.
Directing all unto the Lord amidst the myriad of life’s distractions through an undivided heart (Psalm 86:11).

Love – Loving God & loving our neighbour – fulfils the law & commandments of God.
We were created to wholeheartedly love God in response to His wholehearted love of us.
Created to experience His love & to express our love for Him in return.
Love pouring forth through our attitudes, affections & actions.
To follow Christ is to follow the way of love. We are called to walk in love (Ephesians 5:1-2).
We imitate the Lord when we walk in love.
It is important to put first things first. Jesus modelled this par excellence.

We learn to love by spending time in God’s presence. You become like those you spend your time with.
God is love (I John 4:8) & we learn to love as we stay up close & personal with Him who is love.
To be with Him is to love Him. To do for Him is to share His love with others.
May we be busy, & balanced, in being & doing through the Love of God.
Lord we give you our hearts afresh.

For Reflection

  • What is the state of my heart in terms of my love for God?
  • Am I finding ways to be & stay in the Lord’s loving presence?
  • Meditate upon what it means to wholly love the Lord.

A song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that You love with me all Your heart & hold nothing back from me,
Lead & guide me to experience & express more & more of Your love.
Jesus thank you that You lead me in the way of love.
Holy Spirit teach & train me to fully direct my attitudes, affections & actions unto the Lord through love.
Give me the desire & strength to become more & more devoted unto You.
In Jesus mighty Name.
