Image Bearers

I recently had a stray pigeon join my own flock of racing pigeons.
It had a completely blurred wing stamp (the owner’s stamp).
As a result, it was not easy or straightforward to identify who it belonged to – it lacked an identity.
In discussion with friends, it got me thinking to how we are all carriers of the image of God.
Every human being carries the Maker’s mark.

Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness;
let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle,
over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him;
male and female He created them. Genesis 1:26-27

Wonderfully we are made (created) in the image & likeness of God.
Created with the purpose of reflecting His glory.
That is the heart of what it is to be human.
We are like the Godhead – Father, Son & Spirit – in several ways:

  • We are made for relationship & community
  • We are triune beings who have a body, soul & spirit
  • We are all created equally

As His image bearers we carry His mark. We belong to Him our Creator.
We are created to be God’s kingdom agents & ambassadors (2 Corinthians 5:20) on the earth.
Bringing the rule & reign of God to wall the earth – blessed to have dominion & multiply, be fruitful & fill (Genesis 1:28).
Out of relationship with God we represent Him on earth to exercise His authority.
Covenant relationship (Sonship) & kingdom responsibility (anointing & authority).

Scripture makes it clear who we belong to & what our purpose is.
Our identity, sense of belonging & purpose flows out of our relationship with God our Creator.
That is very clear & distinctive. It is to characterize & mark out our lives.
So unlike the mark & stamp I found on the stray pigeon!
He was lost, his identity blurred & with no easy way to identify where or to whom he belonged.
May we be sure in our identity & to whom we belong.

For Reflection

  • In what ways am I reflecting the glorify of God in, & through, my life?
  • How secure am I in my identity as a child of God?
  • Meditate upon the wonder of being made in the image of God & all that that means.

A song related to this theme:

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that I am fearfully & wonderfully made in Your image,
Made to reflect Your glory as I rule & reign with You.
Lord Jesus thank you that I carry Your mark & stamp,
Set my life apart for Your glory.
Holy Spirit help & strengthen me in my covenant relationship & kingdom responsibilities.
This I ask In Jesus mighty Name.
Amen
