Our Saviour and Lord

Psalm 20 is a psalm that anticipates the saving power of God.
David with great trust confidently prays & calls upon the Lord, his God & saviour, for help & deliverance.
We outlined how that help & deliverance comes in 6 ways:
Protection, Help, Strength & support, Acceptance, Success (prosperity) & Victory.
Today we will look at the protection the Lord provides for us.

May the Lord answer you in the day of trouble;
May the name of the God of Jacob defend you; Psalm 20:1

David is aware that God hears our cries for help & answers in the day of trouble.
God is ever our source of help & strength (Psalm 46:1).
God is our defender & the one who watches over & protects His people.
There are so many different expressions of this throughout the psalms – strong tower, refuge, stronghold, fortress & rock to name a few.
The power for protection is in the Name of the Lord.

Our protection & deliverance is through the power of the Name of the Lord.
David evokes the power of the Great Name twice in this Psalm (verse 1 & 7).
The Name of the God of Jacob looks back to the redemption of Israel from Egypt.
God is our all-powerful protector & deliverer.
What God did for Israel through the exodus He does for us ‘In Christ’.
We are redeemed through Christ who is ever our defender & protector.

Our protection is in the wonderful, beautiful & powerful Name of Jesus.
King Jesus – the Name above all other names (Ephesians 1:21; Philippians 2:9).
He is our defender & protector through His great victory over sin, death & evil.
Our exodus & return from exile is through the great victory of Christ.
The Lord ever watches over us as our constant defender, deliverer & ready protector.
Showing us & sharing with us His great salvation. Hallelujah!

For Reflection

  • In what ways have I experience the power of his Great Name?
  • Share a testimony of how the Lord has delivered & protected you in the day of trouble.
  • Meditate upon the Lord our defender, deliverer & protector.

A song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that You are my God & Saviour,
That you are my ever-present defender & protector.
Jesus thank you that You are the victory of God,
That in you I have been redeemed & am forever being restored.
Holy Spirit keep me calling on the Name of the Lord,
Looking unto Him, above all else, for defense & deliverance in the day of trouble.
This I ask In Jesus mighty Name.
