Who was, and is, and is, to Come

The Lord God who was & is & is to come is the Father, Son & Holy Spirit – the Trinity.
John references the Trinity in the doxology we have been exploring in first chapter of the book of Revelation.
We have investigated some of the incredible & extraordinary phrases that relate to Jesus.
The Holy Spirit will be our focus for today.

Grace to you and peace from Him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven Spirits who are before His throne, and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler over the kings of the earth. Revelation 1:4-5

John refers to the seven Spirits who are before the throne in referencing the Holy Spirit.
It is a term & title that John repeats throughout the Book of Revelation (Revelation 1:4, 3:1, 4:5, 5:6).
In Hebrew seven is the number for completeness or perfection.
There are also seven churches that letters are written to & seven is used in other ways throughout the
book too.
Seven seals, trumpets, signs & bowls will be used by the author as the Revelation unfolds.
God’s complete & perfect plan of salvation is being revealed.
The Holy Spirit is hugely involved & active in bringing that to pass. SELAH

The Holy Spirit is being referenced in His sevenfold fullness.
The Spirit of the Lord that is knowledge, counsel, wisdom, understanding, might & fear of the Lord (Isaiah 11:2).
Here we see the risen Christ at work & active in the seven churches through the Spirit’s power & presence.
The Spirit that supplies perpetual oil to the Church (Zechariah 4:1-14).
Without the Spirit we are powerless. Not by might, nor be power, but by my Spirit says the Lord Of Hosts (Zechariah 4:6).
The Church of Jesus Christ is totally reliant upon the ministry of the Holy Spirit.

We are to be those who have an ear to hear what the Spirit is saying to the church (Revelation 2:7, 11, 17, 29; 3:6, 13, 22).
The Holy Spirit who ministers before the Lord, who was & is & is to come, in Heaven’s throne room is also active in the church upon the earth.
John’s revelation came to the 01st century Church through the Holy Spirit.
That same Spirit is speaking to the Church in the 21st Century in our generation.
Do we have ears to hear & hearts to respond & obey? SELAH

For Reflection

  • In what ways do I discern the ministry & activity of the Holy Spirit in both my life & the Church?
  • What do I sense the Holy Spirit is saying to the Church of today?
  • Meditate upon the ministry of the Holy Spirit in the Church of God.

A song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that You are ever & always Father, Son & Holy Spirit,
And that it is not by power or might but through Your Spirit that your eternal plans & purposes are fulfilled.
Jesus, thank you that You are active in both my life & the Church, which is Your Body,
Through the presence, power & ministry of Your Spirit.
Holy Spirit keep me sensitive to your leading & guiding,
Help me to hear, heed, respond & obey You.
This I ask In Jesus mighty Name.
