The Mystery and Marvel of Christian Maturity
The Apostle Paul prays & tirelessly works towards developing Christians into maturity.
The process is a mystery & a marvel as we are conformed to the image of Christ (Romans 8:29).
Prayer, pastoral care, patience, perseverance & the power of the Spirit at work in, & through, each believer is vital.
Prayer partnered with the Spirit’s sanctifying work being pivotal to the process.
We will look at the heart of Pauls’ prayer today.
For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man, that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height – to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Ephesians 3:14-19
Paul prays passionately for Christ to be formed in believers (cf. Galatians 4:19).
That prayer has three aspects & each aspect picks up a Trinitarian theme:
Paul prays firstly for believers to experience the strength of the Spirit (verse 16 above). Spirit strength in the inner man.
He then prays that Christ will dwell in them – the life & character of Christ being formed & forged in believers (verse 17 above).
Finally, that each believer would be filled with all the fullness of God (verse 19 above).
The Godhead – Father, Son & Spirit – working together to bring believers into the image of Christ & ever deepening Christian maturity.
The Holy Spirit is the agent of enablement supplying the power & strength required.
Christ the One who takes up residence in the heart & life of each believer.
As the believer continues to trust through prevailing faith so Christ transforms through the power of His mighty love.
As more & more of the immeasurable love of Christ pours into our hearts & lives (rooted & grounded) we are filled with the fulness of God.
The Father oversees the process as we attain the measure & maturity that the Lord desires of us. So, so good.
The process is led by the Godhead but is also assisted & aided by the family of believers.
We grow faster & stronger alongside others. WE & me. SELAH
What Paul is highlighting here is available as the shared experience of every believer.
Together the Trinity will faithfully complete the good work they have begun in each one of us (Philippians 1:6).
Every spiritual resource is ever available, but it always needs our ready & willing response.
The measure to which we surrender & submit to the process will determine the speed of transformation & depth of maturity.
Divine empowerment partnering with individual enlightenment!! SELAH
Keep pressing on & in unto the full measure of Christ (Ephesians 4:13). Hallelujah!!!
- Who am I learning Christian maturity from & who am I praying for deeper Christian maturity in?
- Where is the Lord encouraging me to grow & develop (stretch) at this time?
- Meditate upon the height, length, depth & breadth of Christ’s immeasurable love.
A song related to this theme:
Thank you that You have begun a good & perfect work in me,
And that You will be faithful to conform me to the image of Christ & fill me with Your fullness.
Jesus thank you for the strength & power of Your great love,
That its length, depth, height & breadth have no limits.
Holy Spirit keep establishing Christ in me & root & ground me in His immeasurable love,
Help me to readily submit & surrender unto You so that I might readily grow & mature in the faith.
In Jesus mighty Name.
