Spiritual Clothing

The Lord gloriously clothes His people with splendid attire.
We are clothed with Christ (Galatians 3:26-27), His salvation (Isaiah 61:10) & His armour (Ephesians 6:10-13).
Jesus clothes us with power (Luke 24:49) & we have garments of praise (Isaiah 61:3) to celebrate the healing & wholeness He brings.
We are to clothe ourselves as the new humanity in Christ (Colossians 3:8-11) & one of the ways we do that is through humility.
Clothing ourselves with humility will be our focus for today.

Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for “God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.” 1 Peter 5:5

As God’s people ‘In Christ’ we are to clothe ourselves with humility.
This is the way of Jesus (Philippians 2:5-11) & this is the way we must follow. As for the Master so for His pupils.
Humility is a means to accessing the grace & favour of the Lord.
As C.S. Lewis said, “humility is not thinking less of yourself but thinking of yourself less”.
Calvin also referred to it as the chief of the Christian graces.
Everything good in the Christian life grows out of the fertile soil of humility.

Humility is the way of Jesus & it is the antidote to pride which we are so vulnerable to.
God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. SELAH
Pride was at the root of Satan’s fall from heaven & it is a constant temptation for us.
Humility is the constant attitude & readiness to serve others.
As the Lord comfort & cares for us so we are to comfort & care for others..

Clothing ourselves with humility means we will willingly put on the apron of servanthood.
Ready & prepared to serve the Lord & others by putting their needs before our own.
Like Jesus will we gladly take the lowest place & make ourselves available for & vulnerable to others?
It is not an easy path to tread & neither is it an easy mantle to wear. SELAH
We daily need the Lord’s grace, strength & patience to keep serving faithfully & fruitfully.
If we will clothe ourselves with humility God will give us the grace we need & in due time exalt us too (Matthew 23:12; James 4:10).
Take up that humble apron of service & keep laying hold of the grace to serve that comes from the Lord.

Honouring God above all else
Understanding my constant need of God’s grace
Mourning over & repenting of my sin
Illuminating the Lord & glorifying Him
Looking for ways to serve the Lord & others
Ignoring my pride & resisting Satan’s lies
Trusting the Lord’s plan over & above any of my own
Yearning to live for & worship the Lord

Basically, the readiness & willingness to become more & more like Jesus. SELAH

For Reflection

  • How easy do you find it to serve the Lord & others?
  • In what ways are you tempted to pride?
  • Meditate upon the humble apron of servanthood.

A song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that You give grace to the humble,
Help me find that grace & walk in humble service to You & others.
Jesus thank you that You humbled yourself to death upon the cross,
Give me daily strength to keep walking in your ways.
Holy Spirit keep me looking to Jesus & becoming more like Him,
That daily I might humbly walk in faithful & fruitful service.
This I ask in Jesus mighty Name.
