The Lord splendidly clothes His people to equip & empower them to serve & minister in His Name.
Garments of salvation & praise along with spiritual armour are graciously provided.
We must practically respond by taking responsibility & putting these clothes on.
It is an interplay & partnership of divine sovereignty & human responsibility.
The Lord desires it of us but He will never force Himself or His ways upon us.
As soon as we say yes to the Lord the power of the Spirit provides & supplies all we need.
Today we will look at some of the other spiritual clothes we must put on.
Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. Colossians 3:12-14
As the new humanity in Christ (Colossians 3:10) we are to put on the new man created in the image of our Creator, God.
We are exhorted to put on those characteristics that we see perfectly modelled by our Lord Jesus Christ.
These virtues are very similar to the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-25). Similar but not exactly the same. SELAH
We put off the old attitudes & actions of the flesh & we increasingly learn to live & walk in, & of, the Spirit.
Walking in forgiveness & love is key. Love being the great uniting force that binds & holds all these Christlike characteristics together.
This is what it is to be clothed in Christlikeness – character changing to become more & more like Jesus.
We clothe ourselves in the Lord’s values & virtues when we follow the way of Christ.
As we become more & more like Jesus these characteristics & virtues increasingly define our attitudes & actions.
This is the ongoing work of sanctification which starts at our salvation.
The Holy Spirit leads this process & Scripture helps to shape it.
Both of these helpful guides require our ongoing submission & obedience. SELAH
If Jesus needed to learn obedience (Hebrews 5:8) how much more do we!!!
As we let Scripture shape us & the Spirit lead us w walk in the life & power of the Spirit.
This is what it is to put on Christ & fully take up all the Lord has graciously gifted & provided us with.
We are God’s elect, chosen ‘In Christ’, & set apart (holy) as His dearly beloved children.
That great love for us begins to change & transform us as we respond to it.
As we commune with Christ through Scripture & the Spirit, we become ever more like Him.
Living in His love we begin to walk in it & demonstrate it to this world.
It is a powerful & beautiful process that require our daily participation.
The Lord has fully played His part & we must daily do the same.
Keep clothing yourself in all the ways that the Lord has graciously provided..
- How easy do I find it to relate to & respond to the Holy Spirit?
- In what ways am I engaging with Scripture so that it can shape my life?
- Meditate upon what it means to put on Christlike virtues & values.
A song related to this theme:
Thank you that You graciously & generously provide all I need to live for You,
Through your amazing grace & unending love, which flows freely & endlessly to me.
Jesus thank you that You are the way, the truth & the life,
Give me daily strength to keep walking faithfully in Your ways.
Holy Spirit help me to keep putting on Christ & laying aside all fleshly ways,
Keep me attentive to your voice & rightly applying the truths of Scripture in my life.
This I ask in Jesus mighty Name.
