Biblical Roads & Paths

Everyone in life is on a journey. We walk on paths & roads every single day of our lives. Physical paths & spiritual paths. Yesterday we saw how Jesus encouraged us to turn aside to abide in Him & walk the narrow way that leads to life (Matthew 7:13-14). The Apostle Paul portrays a road map in his letter to the Romans. This is often referred to as the Roman Road of Salvation. It will be our focus for today.

For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. Romans 1:16

The Roman Road mapped out by Paul in Scripture leads us to Jesus the Saviour. Paul proclaims His confidence in the Gospel in the opening chapter of Romans. It is the power of God for the salvation of Jew & Gentile (all humanity) through the one-man Jesus Christ. This is the initial road sign or point on the map that points to Jesus as the Saviour.

Paul then goes on to outline the problem of human sinfulness that we have all fallen prey to. All are under the tyranny of sin & we are powerless to pay the penalty for our release & freedom (Romans 3:23). God’s love & grace is revealed as the solution to this problem in that whilst we are trapped & held fast in sin – which separates us from relationship with God – Jesus Christ died for us (Romans 5:8). Christ paid the penalty for sin & breaks the power of sin in our lives. In Jesus alone there is freedom, life & restoration of relationship with God our heavenly Father.

Sin’s wages are death but in & through Jesus we receive the free gift of eternal life – the very life of God Himself (Romans 6:23). The Gospel is glorious good news for all humanity but it must be responded to & accepted. To be saved we must believe in the saving work of Christ upon the cross & confess Him as Lord of our lives (Romans 10:9). A two-fold process with inner (belief) & outer (confession) dimensions). This is because everyone who calls (through genuine repentance) on the name of the Lord will be saved (Romans 10:13). Hallelujah!!

We have now arrived at Paul’s intended destination. The Road Map has led us to the intended goal -Salvation in Christ. The Book of Romans has been used to help save many a soul. That is why many refer to it as The Roman Road to Salvation. Who could you share it with today?

For Reflection

  • What do I do & use to signpost & lead people to Jesus the Saviour?
  • How do I present the good news of the gospel in a clear & concise way?
  • Meditate upon the map that the Romans Road to Salvation in Christ provides.

A song related to this theme:

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Thank you for Your great love & compassion,
That in it, & through it, You are mighty to save.
Jesus thank you that you are the one & only Saviour,
That salvation is in You alone, the One who has conquered & triumphed over sin & the grave.
Holy Spirit keep me looking unto the Lord, & reaching out to others,
That knowing Christ I may make Him known in & through my life & witness. This I ask in Jesus mighty Name.
Amen
