Godly living in an ungodly world.

Psalm 141 sees David using every part of his body & who he is to fully honour the Lord. We see him Lifting his hands in prayer, Guarding his lips & mouth, Watching over his heart & Looking up to the Lord. These spiritual practices (or others like them) need regular, daily, use to enable our walk with God to thrive & flourish. Today, as we conclude this TFD series, we will focus upon Looking up unto the Lord.

But my eyes are upon You, O GOD the Lord;
In You I take refuge;
Do not leave my soul destitute.
Psalm 141:8 NKJV

David only has eyes for the Lord, the one who is his refuge, strength & strong tower. David lifts his eyes to look unto the Lord, lifting his gaze, attention & focus beyond all earthly things & fixing it upon his heavenly Father. David seeks communion with the one who comforts, cares for & keeps him safe. David seeks the Lord’s heavenly perspective upon all he is experiencing in his life. He looks firstly unto the Lord.

David seeks to hide himself in the Lord. Sheltering under the Lord’s protective covering (Psalm 91:1). He is not seeking an escape from this life or what he must face upon the earth, but getting his perspective, understanding, comfort & courage from the Lord. So important we look to the Lord, first & foremost. David is seeking the secret place where he can abide in God’s presence. As he moves from there David has godly assurance alongside the ability to exercise godly wisdom. SELAH

Davis is not looking within to his own strength or around to the help available in the world, but up (Psalm 121:1-2) to His Father in heaven. In similar vein we are encouraged to do the same by fixing our eyes upon Jesus the author & perfecter of our faith (Hebrews 12:2). Let us be those who always look firstly unto the Lord, a people walking in wisdom from above because we have sought & gained a heavenly perspective. That is how we live for God in an ungodly world – first things first – SEEK THE LORD UNTIL YOU FIND HIM. Hallelujah!!

For Reflection

  • How readily do I lift, & fix, my eyes up unto the Lord?
  • In what ways am I looking unto Him right now?
  • Meditate upon the best way to have a godly perspective on live.

A song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that you are my ever-present help & strength,
That you are my refuge & a very pleasant help in times of trouble.
Jesus thank you that rescued me from sin & death,
Help me to keep my eyes fixed upon You, my Saviour, Lord & King.
Holy Spirit keep me looking up & focussing in upon the lord,
Gaining & maintaining a godly perspective for every circumstance of my life. This I ask in the mighty Name of Jesus.
