The Goodness of God

Happy New Year to you all. We ended 2023 meditating upon how to live well for God.
Let us begin 2024 by reflecting on the awesome goodness of our God.
Psalm 65 gives us a good insight into the goodness, grace & greatness of our God.
David, the author, outlines numerous ways the goodness of the Lord extends to & overflows to His people.
We will begin exploring them today.

Praise is awaiting You, O God, in Zion;
And to You the vow shall be performed.
O You who hear prayer,
To You all flesh will come.
Iniquities prevail against me;
As for our transgressions,
You will provide atonement for them.

Blessed is the man You choose,
And cause to approach You,
That he may dwell in Your courts.
We shall be satisfied with the goodness of Your house,
Of Your holy temple.
Psalm 65:1-4 NKJV

David highlights how the Lord is the God of our salvation & the hope of all humanity.
The Creator God continues to demonstrate His power by His providence, protection & provision for His people.
He answers prayer (verse 2), forgives sins (verse 3) whilst also being the One who saves & delivers (verse 5).
The delight of abiding in God’s presence is a great prize for His people (verse 4).
God’s bountiful blessing upon the earth is life & abundance (verses 9-13) – both for creation & all creatures. SELAH

David poetically draws attention to the presence of God which is ever worthy of praise.
He also draws attention to the rule & reign of the Lord over creation, humanity & the nations (verses 5-8).
Great & majestic are the works & wonders of the Lord in nature & through history.
There are great inherent ‘Covenantal’ blessings & benefits for those who will submit to God’s rule & praise His glorious name.
Like Creation we must join in with joyful praise of the Creator & Saviour (Redeemer).

The God of goodness & abundance extends His unending favour & blessings to His people.
There is a continual blessing for Creation & a special ‘Covenantal’ blessing for the people of God. SELAH
Those who are new creations ‘in Christ’ experience & enjoy that rich favour & blessing (2 Corinthians 5:17).
Those ‘In Christ’ are relentlessly pursued by the goodness of God (Psalm 23:5-6). Hallelujah!!
God is good all the time & all the time God is good. Lord, let your goodness & mercy keep running over me.

For Reflection

  • How am I thankful for, & in what ways am I praising, the goodness of God?
  • In what ways am I experiencing & enjoying the bountiful goodness of God?
  • Meditate upon the amazing & unchanging goodness of God.

A song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you for Your enduring eternal goodness, grace & greatness,
That through your mighty providence, You are my constant provider & protector.
Jesus, my majestic Saviour, Lord & King,
Thank you that I can forever abide in God’s presence because of Your great sacrifice.
Holy Spirit keep me daily worshipping & praising the Lord,
Experiencing & enjoying the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living,
Forever submitting to His rule & reign in, & through, my life.
This I ask in the mighty Name of Jesus.
