The Wonder of the Word

God’s word is alive, active, dynamic & powerful (Hebrews 4:12). The Scriptures shape & mould us to become like Jesus.
The Holy Spirit inspired Word of God leads to a blessed life upon a solid, steadfast foundation (Psalm 1:1-3; Matthew 7:24-27).
In addition to this it also Sustains, Strengthens, Signposts, Succours & Saves us through its divine power & authority.
Today we will think upon how God’s Word sustains us. It is spiritual food & rich nourishment for us.

But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’ ” Matthew 4:4 NKJV

God’s Word feeds us like bread, & other food. Bread feeds our physical bodies but we have a soul & spirit too.
Partaking of physical food maintains life in this body. Each & every one of us must eat to survive – usually 3 times each day!!
The Word of God sustains & nourishes us in a different way. It is spiritual food for our souls & spirit.
In the passage above Jesus makes clear that spiritual food & nourishment is essential for us.
True life & rich nourishment are found in the Word of God & the words that come from God. SELAH

Jesus also talked about consuming food that His disciples knew nothing about (John 4:32-34).
In this verse from John’s gospel Jesus is talking about feeding upon & feasting upon spiritual nutrients.
Hearing & heeding the Word of God & knowing & doing the Father’s will. This was His spiritual sustenance & strength.
When we discern & obey the Word of God & truly follow the will of God we will be feasting indeed!! SELAH
As for the Master so for His followers – Word, ways & will of God. Hallelujah!!

The Word of God is sweet sustenance & rich nourishment enabling us to grow in strength & develop in our spiritual lives.

We are those who need to progress in the Christian life & mature in Christlike character.
Just like in our physical bodies this means moving from milk to solid food (1 Corinthians 3:1-2; Hebrews 5:12-14).
There are teachers gifted to the body of Christ who can provide us with a good meal but we must also learn to feed ourselves. SELAH
God through His grace has provided rich & abundant fare for us – the Scriptures & the prophetic words of the Lord.
We must be those who take responsibility for our own spiritual formation & development. Take & eat, hear & apply.
We can only grow in the faith when we are feeding upon, & feasting upon, Christ & His Word. Hallelujah!!

For Reflection

  • How balanced is my spiritual diet & am I eating regularly (physically we usually eat 3 times a day!!)?
  • In what ways am I feeding & feasting on the Word of God & God’s prophetic word/s to me?
  • Meditate upon the spiritual food & nourishment we need as Christians.

A song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the sustenance & strength that comes from Your Word,
Feeding me & helping me to grow in godly maturity & Christlikeness.
Jesus thank you that You model how to feed & feast in the Word, ways & will of God,
Teach & train me, through the power of Your Spirit, to do the same.
Holy Spirit keep me feeding & feasting upon the Word & words of God,
Hearing, heeding & rightly applying them with wisdom in, & to, my life.
This I ask in the mighty Name of Jesus.
