The Wonder of the Word
God’s Word is powerfully at work in every believer to Sustain, Strengthen, Signpost, Succour & Save.
It is also part of the process by which we are sanctified. Sanctification is being set apart for God & made holy.
Scripture & the Holy Spirit work together to sanctify the believer. Setting us apart for God’s special use & purpose.
That is why a regular daily routine of Bible reading, study & meditation alongside sensitivity to the Holy Spirit are so important.
Today we will think upon how the Word of God helps to sanctify us – shaping & molding us to be more Christlike.
Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.
As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world.
And for their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they also may be sanctified by the truth. John 17:17-19 NKJV
We are saved by faith in Christ & sanctified through Scripture & the Spirit.
Scripture is full of God’s truth. His word is Truth & that truth sanctifies the believer.
The truth of the Word of God, illuminated by the Holy Spirit, applied to the believer’s life brings Christlikeness.
We are bit by bit made more & more like Jesus & ever more holy in our attitude & actions.
That is why the daily application of the truth of God’s word is crucial for our spiritual formation & development. SELAH
As we abide in the Scriptures the Holy Spirit takes the Word of God & reveals God’s perfect will for our lives.
We grow in God’s grace through the expanding & deepening knowledge of His truth.
As we yield in obedience to His truth we are sanctified by that truth. Obedience as ever is a crucial key.
God’s word ministers to us, in the power of the Spirit, to bring about godly Christlike change.
It is therefore our daily responsibility to apply the Word of God to our lives through the power & promptings of the Spirit.
It is similar to taking a daily physical bath or shower as we spiritually cleanse & refresh ourselves.
It renews the mind (Romans 12:1-2) & purifies the heart & mind (Hebrews 4:12). SELAH
Christ has saved us (justification) but our sanctification is dependent upon our cooperation with His Spirit & commitment to Christlike change.
Sanctification therefore necessitates a relationship with both God’s Word & the Holy Spirit.
As we respond in obedient submission to both we are made more Christlike. They are the tools & we are the work of art!!
Each contributes to & facilitates the work of God in us until it is complete (2 Timothy 3:16-17).
This is a lifelong process & may never be perfected in this earthly life, but it will be completed & perfected (1 Thessalonians 5:23-24).
God is totally faithful & He will complete His good work which He has begun & is continuing in us (Philippians 1:6). Hallelujah!!
Our ready cooperation & commitment to change is a catalyst in the process. SELAH
It is what the Lord longs for & desires of each one of His beloved children.
May we be willing & malleable partners in the sanctification process. To God be the Glory.
- How am I engaging with Scripture & the Holy Spirit on a daily basis?
- In what ways am I hungry for & desiring Godly change & holiness in my life?
- Meditate upon how the Word of God contributes to our sanctification.
A song related to this theme:
Thank You for the transforming power of Your Word,
That it reveals Your truth & moulds me into the character of Christ.
Jesus thank you that You are totally committed to my sanctification,
That Your sacrificial death saved me & that You are now ever seeking to conform me to Your image.
Holy Spirit make me a ready responder to Your illumination, revelation & promptings,
That the work of God might progress smoothly & steadily in my life.
This I ask in the mighty Name of Jesus.
