The cost of discipleship

Being a disciple of Jesus has benefits & blessings as well as costs.
It requires focus, total commitment, a turning from self towards Christ & embracing a life of worship & witness.
Yesterday we saw how we are to be turn aside from & cast off sin & self so that we can fully turn to & follow Jesus.
We are to put on & clothe ourselves in the New humanity in Christ (Colossians 3:9-11).
Laying hold of Christ’s light so that we can walk in His light (John 8:12; Ephesians 5:8).
Today we will consider how we are to be both worshippers & witnesses for Christ. SELAH

But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth;
for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” John 4:23-24 NKJV

As those first disciples walked with Jesus they marvelled at His words, works & wonder.
Following His resurrection from the dead this progressed to worshipping Him.
In the garden Mary clings to the resurrected Christ in worship (John 20:17-18). As Mary worships Him Jesus sends her forth as a witness!!
In the upper room Thomas confesses ‘My Lord & My God’ (John 20:26-29). Thomas’ doubt is cast aside in faith filled worship!!
The first instances of being worshippers & witnesses of the resurrected Christ – all the more remarkable coming from monotheistic Jews!!
The call to follow Jesus is the call to worship Him as Saviour, Lord & King & to witness to that great truth. SELAH
As we worship Jesus we worship the lord God in Spirit & in truth.

Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen. Matthew 18:19-20

Jesus calls us to go & invite others to follow Him. We are to be witnesses of the resurrected Lord Jesus.
All authority has been committed to Christ & He sends us forth in that authority & in the power of the Spirit.
As we GO wonderfully Christ goes with us. He is ever with us & always for us.
Equipping, enabling & empowering through the presence & power of the Holy Spirit.
To be a witness we just need to faithfully tell our story of how Jesus has changed & transformed our lives.
Nobody can deny your story & every testimony (small or large, ordinary or extraordinary) carries power.
The call to every Christian is to be a fisher of men (Luke 5:10-11) & a disciple who make disciples.
We disciple nations by winning people for Christ one at a time & by working TOGETHER as Christ’s witnesses.

We are to follow the ways of Christ & worship, witness & work together in pairs, teams & community. SELAH
Christ through the power of the Spirit works alongside us. He works in us & He works through us. Hallelujah!!
Both worship & witness make Christ known. As we faithfully do both to lift Jesus up He will draw people to Himself (John 3:14-17).
Passionate worship is a pathway to personal witness. Worship & witness go hand in hand. SELAH
We gather to worship & go to witness. Take courage as you gather & be bold as you go in your continuing worship & witness.

For Reflection

  • In what ways am I worshipping & witnessing for the Lord?
  • Who am I working alongside to make Jesus known?
  • Meditate upon the demands of being both a worshipper & a witness for Christ.

A song related to this theme:

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that You call me to worship You & be a witness for You,
Keep me lifting high & testifying of the Risen Lord Jesus.
Jesus, may my life honour & glorify You as my Saviour, Lord & King,
Give me strength to keep walking in Your ways as I worship & witness for You
Holy Spirit keep me faithfully gathering for worship with the Body of Christ,
And send me forth in the power of the Spirit as a bold witness.
This I ask in the mighty Name of Jesus.
Amen
