God’s Presence

God longs to be in relationship with His people & that is why He dwelt in their midst.
We see this in the garden of Eden in the early chapters of Genesis & we see this with the people & nation of Israel.
Not only that He promised that His presence would go with Israel & provide them rest (Exodus 33:13-15).
Scripture reveals to us the ways that God has chosen to reveal His presence:

  • The tabernacle & then the temple
  • Jesus’s physical body through the incarnation
  • The Holy Spirit being poured out at Pentecost
  • The holy spiritual temple that God is now building in the Body of Christ (the Church)
  • God dwelling forever with His people in the New Creation.

Today we will consider the tabernacle & temple.

And there I will meet with the children of Israel, and the tabernacle shall be sanctified by My glory.
So I will consecrate the tabernacle of meeting and the altar.
I will also consecrate both Aaron and his sons to minister to Me as priests. Exodus 29:43-44 NKJV

The presence of God was experienced & encountered via God’s presence in the tabernacle & later the Jerusalem temple.
Israel camped around the tabernacle & therefore around God’s awesome presence (Numbers 2).
The pillar of cloud by day & the pillar of fire by night being a constant reminder to the people.
The tabernacle was sanctified & consecrated through the glory of God’s presence. SELAH
God promised to meet with the children of Israel at the tabernacle. Wonderful!!

The meeting took place via the mediating role of the priesthood. Aaron & his sons.
God dwelt in tabernacle, & later the temple, in the Holy of Holies above or upon the mercy seat (Exodus 25:10-22).
This was where He met with Moses (face to face/as a friend) to reveal His commandments & ways to Israel.
It was also where the atoning sacrifice on the Day of Atonement was made (Leviticus 16:11-17) – just once each year.
The presence of God providing fellowship, friendship, instruction, direction & forgiveness. SELAH

God came to earth as a man to tabernacle with humanity (John 1:14).
That is the power & wonder of the incarnation. God with Us – Immanuel (Matthew 1:23).
His presence amongst man – up close & personal. Just incredible. SELAH.
The Lord Jesus Christ has become for us the mercy seat (Romans 3:25) & the place where we now tabernacle with God.
God’s presence made available through Christ, our High Priest & the ultimate sacrifice & saviour!! (Hebrews 9:12)
‘In Christ’ you are forever welcomed into the presence of the Lord. Hallelujah!!

For Reflection

  • Am I bold & confident in my fellowship & friendship with God?
  • In what ways am I running unto the ‘mercy seat’?
  • Meditate upon God’s presence tabernacling with humanity.

A song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that You desire for me to come daily into Your presence,
And that Jesus made a way through His death & resurrection.
Jesus, thank you that you are my Great High Priest & ‘mercy seat’,
That You shed Your precious blood for my salvation & have raised me to newness of life.
Holy Spirit keep me running unto the ‘mercy seat’ who is Christ,
And forever tabernacling with my heavenly Father.
This I ask in the mighty Name of Jesus.
